HOLLYWOOD PARK: ELITE EQUINES EXPECTED HOLLYWOOD PARK'S AUTUMN SEASON IS LIKELY TO BE ONE OF ITS BEST IN YEARS.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

Some years, Hollywood Park's autumn season gets lost in the shadow of the Breeders' Cup The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I thoroughbred horse races operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982 by a consortium of North American racing organizations, led by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. . This should be one of the good years.

The Inglewood track's 31-day thoroughbred meet opens this afternoon amid the hope that Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1ΒΌ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup.  winner Tiznow will enter the Dec. 1 Hollywood Turf Cup and the expectation that Breeders' Cup Mile winner Val Royal will run in the Nov. 24 Citation Handicap The Citation Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses usually set at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the turf for horses three-years-old and up. The race is held annually at Hollywood Park Racetrack, but was not run in 2005 because of a hiatus on grass racing at .

The Citation, Matriarch and Hollywood Turf Express are part of the track's annual Turf Festival, offering six graded stakes, with purses totaling $2.1 million, on the infield grass course. The Citation, Matriarch and the Nov. 25 Hollywood Derby are $500,000 races.

The chance of Tiznow vanning over from Santa Anita to run in the Turf Cup seemed to rise this week when owner Michael Cooper ruled out sending the 4-year-old to Churchill Downs in Kentucky for the Nov. 23 Clark Handicap. But trainer Jay Robbins said it's possible Tiznow won't race again until the Jan. 5 San Pasqual Handicap The San Pasqual Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. The last Breeders' Cup champion to win a race at the ensuing Hollywood Park autumn meet was Miss Alleged, who scored an upset in the 1991 Turf at Churchill Downs and then won the Turf Cup.

Top-quality turf racing is expected at Hollywood Park, one of the few tracks with suitable weather at this time of the season.

Also expected is a struggle to fill the every-day programs with quality races. Today's card drew only 57 entrants and shrank to seven races from a scheduled eight.

But Hollywood Park executives say they'll concentrate on producing large fields for better-attended Friday and weekend cards. They expect to be helped by the return of horses affected by an equine flu during the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita.

Today's feature race, the $70,000 Bien Bien Stakes at 1 mile on turf, drew a seven-horse field headed by Sigfreto, winner of the Pomona Derby and a division of the Oceanside Stakes, and Momentum, a new face from England.

Jockey Victor Espinoza and trainer Bobby Frankel begin defenses of their 2000 autumn-meet titles.

Hollywood Park is offering free admission and parking today (it's normally a $7 combined price). The first race is 12:30 p.m. most days.

Friday-night racing, canceled during Hollywood Park's summer meet because of the California energy crunch, will return with 7 p.m. first posts the next two Fridays.

The meet runs through Monday, Dec. 17. A nine-day break will precede the long Santa Anita season's opening Wednesday, Dec. 26.
