HOLLYWOOD LANDMARK TO RECEIVE MAJOR FACE LIFT; CRA APPROVES REHABILITATION LOAN FOR FAMED J.J. NEWBERRY STORE IN HOLLYWOOD
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) board of commissioners has approved a $249,990 10-year loan agreement with the McCrory Corp. to restore and rehabilitate the landmark J.J. Newberry store in Hollywood.
The board's action will provide funds for rehabilitation work on the store located at 6600-04 Hollywood Blvd. The store, which opened its doors in 1933, has been closed for nearly a year due to a fire.
Work on the two-story structure -- designated a contributing building to the National Register: Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District -- is scheduled to start in January, 1992.
Exterior and interior rehabilitation will include restoration of the building facade to its original classic 1930's look. CRA funding also will be used for major structural and utility improvements, new signage, awnings and windows as well as the installation of new automatic doors for the disabled.
Total renovation and rehabilitation costs for the store restoration is $689,900. In addition to CRA funding for the project, the McCrory Corp. also is committing over $400,000 of its own funds as well as $40,000 committed by the Hollywood Economic Revitialization Effort (HERE).
The renovation design work of the J.J. Newberry building was done by the Thirtieth Street Architects Inc. of Newport Beach, Calif. It is expected that the store will re-open in April 1992.
