Screenwriter Lionel Chetwynd and Craig Haffner, chief executive officer of Greystone Communications Groups Inc., said Thursday that they had been dealing with the Bush administration for a few months in efforts to ease the adversarial ad·ver·sar·i·al

Haffner said the task force's purpose could range from procuring Procuring, in general, is the act of acquiring goods or services, usually by contract. It may refer to:

He said the entertainment industry has made significant contributions since Sept. 11, from concerts and telethons to public-service announcements, and still wants to do more.

``And there needs to be a point of contact because the White House doesn't have the mechanism to handle the outpouring that they've gotten,'' Haffner said.

Chetwynd suggested the task force may be up and running sooner in the private sector than on the government's side. White House officials will be holding more meetings in Washington with various departments before proceeding.

But Chetwynd said the task force will not be a propaganda machine.

``I don't think it is to try and influence what we do,'' he said. ``No one has discussed conscripting anybody from Hollywood into the service.''

Chetwynd said there may have been political motives to outreach efforts before the terrorist attacks, but not now.

Chetwynd and Haffner said the task force could become a permanent Washington fixture if it is effective. Gustafson, however, said powers might be abused after the sense of crisis has passed.
