The Christmas Bird Count began on Christmas Day 1900, when a small group of conservationists began counting the birds they saw - as opposed to the traditional holiday activity of hunting the birds.

The information is used to study migratory bird patterns, species dispersal and health of particular species. It is made available to scientists worldwide to identify and protect sites deemed most critical to birds, Savaikie said. In the last two Christmas Bird Counts, several rare bird species were recorded, including the northern harrier, golden eagle, peregrine falcon and Bell's sage sparrow sage sparrow
