HOLIDAY TRIMMING TRADITION IN DANGER FROM STREET-REPAIR CREW.

But city officials said Monday that the paving work on Hatteras Street will be done well before the start of the festivities fes·tiv·i·ty

spokeswoman Lauren Skinner said the crews were well aware of the neighborhood's annual event and were working to get the job done.

Still, neighbors eyed the dug-up street Monday with skepticism.

``Why did they wait until the last minute with the holidays? They know this is a really popular area,'' said Diana Dekermendjian, whose family has been decorating its Penfield Avenue home for the past 10 years.

``They should have done this back in September,'' she said. ``It's just going to cause a lot of chaos.''

Every holiday season, the residents of the neighborhood deck out their homes in fanciful fan·ci·ful

The displays draw visitors from across Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  who drive up and down the streets to see the collection. One resident said up to 1,000 cars a night descend de·scend

A dug-up street would hit like a lump of coal in a stocking at the holidays.

``If the city doesn't get it done, I think that would cause a lot of frustration,'' said Dekermendjian.

But others said that even if the work stalls, it wouldn't be so bad because traffic crawls so slowly anyway that motorists might not even notice the construction.

``If people want to come, they'll come,'' said resident Pam Alch, whose family will be decorating its home for the third year. ``I'm just hoping it's going to get done.''

Resident Ron Scott added that because most of the traffic drives north and south through the neighborhood, the construction on Hatteras - which runs east to west - might not be so noticeable.

``If they took a north-south street and didn't have the street finished, that would create some complaints,'' said Scott, who was working on his light display Monday morning in the garage.

Still, residents were pleased with the prospect of a fresh coat of paving and hopeful the city would come through in time.

Many said the decorating begins in earnest the first weekend of December, with visitors expected to start pouring in by Dec. 10. Many families will keep the displays up through the New Year's holiday weekend.
