SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The sales started at midnight and got stronger as the day went on. Never mind merchants' efforts to push up the shopping season to early November -- Friday was the real start of the holiday mall frenzy.

Laden with shopping bags, Irma and Efrain Gutierrez plodded from Mervyn's in Valencia before 8 a.m. They'd braved the crowds and the 50-foot-long lines, happy to have saved some significant cash by getting a jump-start on the day.

``It's crazy,'' mall marketing director Jalena Warner said later in the day. ``We have got a mad rush coming through.''

Black Friday Black Friday, Sept. 24, 1869, in U.S. history, day of financial panic. In 1869 a small group of American financial speculators, including Jay Gould and James Fisk, sought the support of federal officials of the Grant administration in a drive to corner the gold  because it's key to yearly profits -- the busiest shopping day of the year has become the Saturday before Christmas.

Apo Yessayan, owner of Classic Design Jewelers on Valencia Boulevard said that's definitely true for his store.

``The trends are changing,'' Yessayan said. ``In the past, people used to shop right after Thanksgiving, but the trend we see is the closer we get to Christmas is when we get busy -- especially the men. They wait for the 22nd, 23rd, sometimes the 24th.''
