HOLD THE PICKLES, HOLD THE LETTUCE, HOLD THE PHONE... U S WEST AND JOURNAL GRAPHICS GET RECORD RESPONSE TO DONAHUE

DENVER, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Tens of thousands of television viewers responded en masse to an appearance by Gloria Pitzer, "The Recipe Detective" on last Thursday's DONAHUE. Record numbers of phone calls were received by both Journal Graphics, the nations's leading television transcription and information company, and U S WEST, provider of telecommunications services to Journal Graphics' headquarters here. All those callers were trying to unlock America's best kept secret: how do the Colonel, Dave Thomas and Ronald McDonald do it?
Mrs. Pitzer hosts her own radio show and has authored several books revealing the recipe secrets of some of America's best-known, best-loved and busiest food chains. Her "make-alike" recipes for "White Tassle" burgers, "Big Bucket in the Sky" chicken, "Hopeless Twinkles," "Recess Peanut Butter Cups" and other traditional American fast foods, were prepared for Phil Donahue and an appreciative studio audience last week.
Throughout the hour-long program, Phil highlighted the availability of a transcript containing the Pitzer recipes. Journal Graphics, longtime transcription and fulfillment company for Multimedia Entertainment's DONAHUE show, was inundated with thousands of viewer requests by phone immediately following the broadcast. U S WEST reported a first wave of 23,000 calls received through its network. Initial viewer mail response numbered over 50,000 pieces. To date, a full seven days after the initial broadcast, phone and mail response continues to be monumental.
In its fifteen year history, Journal Graphics has seen other record responses for its transcripts and show-related products, however, this response has more than doubled the previous "company best." Jim Hoffman, CEO of Journal Graphics, commented: "It was easy to see that the transcript would be popular, and we are elated at the level of viewer response. The overwhelming number of calls pushed the U S WEST voice response system to capacity. A transcript like this has very broad appeal. I've already tried some of the recipes and they are really great."
Phil Donahue and Multimedia Entertainment, the producer and syndicator of DONAHUE, have always championed the access of viewers to programming that informs and interests then, even prior to the proliferation of VCRs in American households. In their view, transcripts are one affordable, viewer-friendly way for audiences to bring their favorite programming home.
Julie Farin, manger of publicity and promotion for Multimedia Entertainment, was pleased at this response to their afternoon talk show leader. "The overwhelming response to DONAHUE did not come as a surprise to Multimedia Entertainment. In fact, requests for videocassettes of the show came in at 10 times the usual volume," said Farin. Multimedia also produces the Sally Jessy Raphael, Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Springer talk shows.
The DONAHUE show saw history repeat itself with this second broadcast featuring Gloria Pitzer. Her previous appearance, in July of 1981, generated a similar flood of responses. DONAHUE is currently celebrating its 25th year on the air. The show is acknowledged pioneer in the fast-growing television talk show market and has always been the pacesetter for the field.
Journal Graphics continues to break new ground in the television transcription and information industry through its swift and accurate, high technology coverage of over 100 news, talk, and public affairs programs weekly for leaders in cable, network, public and syndicated broadcasting.
