 HOECHST STRENGTHENS POSITION IN CHINA
 SOMERVILLE, N.J., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoechst and the Ministry


of Chemical Industry of the Peoples Republic of China jointly agreed to further strengthen their cooperation in the areas of organic chemicals, engineering plastics, agricultural chemicals, dyes and pigments and technical fibers. The cooperation will also include related management development as well as research and development programs.
 Dr. Ernest H. Drew, president and chief executive officer of Hoechst Celanese Corporation, and Dr. Karl G. Seifert, board member of Hoechst AG, signed the cooperation agreement last week during a visit of a Hoechst delegation to Beijing. Dr. Drew is in charge of Hoechst affairs in China. Dr. Seifert has responsibility for Hoechst's worldwide pharmaceutical and agricultural activities.
 In addition, Dr. Gerhard Prante, head of Hoechst's Agricultural Division, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Office of the Agricultural Materials Group of the State Council for cooperation in the market development and production of Hoechst's crop protection products.
 Hoechst is represented in the People's Republic of China by Hoechst China, headquartered in Hong Kong, and its offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and three other major cities.
 Hoechst Celanese, a Hoechst affiliate in North America, already operates a joint venture in Nantong near Shanghai to produce cellulose acetate filter tow. Capacity expansions are underway at that facility. Two additional filter tow joint ventures in Kunming/Yunnan Province and Zhuhai near Hong Kong are in the approval process.
 Hoechst AG is currently negotiating a major investment to produce pharmaceuticals in the Shanghai Pudong New Development Zone.
 Hoechst Celanese is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoechst AG of Germany, with leading positions in chemicals, fibers, advanced materials and technologies and the life sciences.
