HOCKEY NOTEBOOK: VIPERS WIN TOURNAMENT.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

VALENCIA - The Valencia/Sylmar-based Pee Wee Pee Wee, Pee-wee or peewee may refer to:
  • Donald Henry "Pee Wee" Gaskins, American serial killer
  • "Pee Wee" Russell, jazz musician
  • "Pee Wee" Reese, Hall of Fame baseball player.
  • Pee-wee Herman, a character created and portrayed by Paul Reubens.
A Vipers (11- and 12-year-olds) rebounded from a disappointing loss in a big way.

After experiencing their biggest setback of the season in early February, the Vipers' outlook going into one of the nation's most prestigious youth-level hockey tournaments was not good. But the Vipers apparently were able to put their disappointment behind them, at least enough to win the 27th Annual Pikes Peak Pikes Peak, 14,110 ft (4,301 m) high, central Colo., in the Front Range of the Rocky Mts.; discovered by U.S. explorer Zebulon Pike in 1806. There are many higher peaks in the Rockies, but this is the best known and most conspicuous because of its location on the  President's Day Tournament in Colorado.

The Vipers, who were coming off a 12-5 loss to the San Diego Gulls The San Diego Gulls were a minor league ice hockey team that played in the Pacific Division of the ECHL, and played its home games at the IPayOne Center (aka San Diego Sports Arena). After the NHL lockout in 2004, the Gulls became the ECHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.  - their only California Amateur Hockey Association loss to date - went 4-0-1 in the tournament, highlighted by a 4-3 victory over the host Pikes Peak Tigers in the championship game.

``It was a great tournament,'' Vipers coach Larry Bruyere said. ``It was one we did not expect to win.''

Stevie Inouye and Jonathon Park each scored two goals for the Vipers, and goalie Ricky Ascencio had 24 saves.

--More practice: The Vipers canceled a previously scheduled exhibition game today against the Valencia Express Bantam team and instead will spend the day practicing in preparation for next week's CAHA CAHA Cape Hatteras National Seashore (US National Park Service)
CAHA Canadian Amateur Hockey Association

playoffs, which will be held Thursday to Sunday at the Ice Station.

The Vipers have also added a Sunday practice.

``We just felt that we needed the practice,'' Bruyere said. ``There are some specific things that we need to work on.''

--Big wins: The Pee Wee Vipers were among four locally based teams to win President's Day tournaments. The Valencia Express Squirt (9- and 10-year-olds) and Pee Wee A teams won tournaments at Phoenix and Montreal, respectively, and the Vipers Midget AA (16-and-under) team won the Lakewood tournament.

--Chicago blues: The Valencia Express Midget A (17-and-under) team struggled against some formidable opponents at the Chicago President's Day Tournament.

``We weren't expecting what they gave us,'' Express coach Dennis Gilbert Dennis Gilbert is professor and chair of sociology at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. The Express is hoping the experience will help the team in preparation for the final stretch of its Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. The Express plays on the road against the Riverside Coyotes on Sunday, and then plays host to the Anaheim Junior Ducks the following week.

Valencia (10-2-2) and the Ducks are tied for first place with identical records.
