HOAG NAMED CHAIRMAN OF AMERICAN IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE

NEW YORK, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today announced the election of David H. Hoag, chief executive officer of the LTV Steel Company (NYSE: QLTV), to the position of chairman of the institute's board.
He assumes that position Friday, May 21, when he succeeds Joseph F. Toot Jr., chief executive officer of The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR), who has served two one-year terms as chairman of AISI.
Hoag has been LTV Steel's senior officer since January 1985. He was previously president and chief executive officer of the LTV Corporation's Jones & Laughlin Steel subsidiary before its operations were combined with those of the Republic Steel Corporation to form the LTV Steel Company.
A native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Allegheny College, Hoag joined the J&L sales organization in 1960. He was appointed vice president of marketing services in 1977 and was named vice president of sales in 1978, when J&L's operations were merged with those of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company.
From 1979 to 1982, he was president of J&L's basic steel - eastern division. In that position, he was responsible for fully integrated steel producing operations in Pittsburgh and Aliquippa, Pa., as well as for cold finished steel bar plants in Indiana, Connecticut, New Jersey, Kansas, Iowa, Mississippi and Ohio. He later served as executive vice president of J&L.
Hoag's election was made public at The Waldorf Astoria on the last day of AISI's 101st General Meeting. At the same time it was announced that Toot and Thomas J. Usher have been elected vice chairmen of the institute. Usher is president, U.S. Steel Group (NYSE: X), USX Corporation.
