HITACHI TO EXPAND TV PICTURE TUBE PLANT

GREENVILLE, S.C., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Hitachi Electronic Devices (USA), Inc. announced today that it will begin producing picture tubes for projection television at its Greenville facility by June 1994.
Hitachi Electronic Devices (USA), Inc. will begin construction immediately on a 65,000-square foot addition to its existing plant to manufacture projection TV tubes. The company expects to manufacture 33,000 projection tubes monthly by mid-1994 and double capacity to 66,000 by early 1995. Hitachi Electronic Devices currently produces 25- and 27-inch color picture tubes at its Greenville facility and will expand its product line to include 31-inch tubes by the end of this year.
The Greenville plant opened in October 1991 and is currently producing, at capacity, 800,000 picture tubes annually. Hitachi Electronic Devices employs 450 people at its Greenville facility and expects to add another 100 employees to handle this latest expansion.
Currently, more than 80 percent of the projection television tubes Hitachi manufacturers in Japan end up in U.S. markets. Hitachi officials note that the recent escalation in the yen's value versus the dollar is compelling Hitachi to shift production of key products nearer to end markets, to help minimize impact from currency fluctuations.
"The U.S. market is the largest in the world for projection television tubes and Hitachi is the largest producer," said Takashi Masuko, president of Hitachi Electronic Devices. "We feel that it is an opportune time to shift production from Japan to Greenville, to fully capitalize on current opportunities here and most effectively serve the needs of our U.S. customers."
Masuko noted that the new facility will be held to the same rigorous standards for quality-engineered products that Hitachi expects from all its operations. "We believe this facility will further enhance the solid reputation we've cultivated among television manufacturers worldwide," explained Masuko.
Established in 1990 as a subsidiary of Hitachi America, Ltd., Hitachi Electronic Devices manufactures color picture tubes. Hitachi America, Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT)
