A Van Nuys auto body shop manager was set free on $50,000 bail after his arrest in a hit-and-run accident that killed a mother and her 3-year-old daughter over the weekend in South Los Angeles South Los Angeles is the official name for a large geographic and cultural area lying to the southwest and southeast of downtown Los Angeles, California. Leuschner said two other people who knew about the accident, but did not come forward, may face arrest.

The accident occurred about 5 p.m. Saturday when Gloria Nunez, 31, was pushing her daughter, Helen Valle, in a laundry cart diagonally across San Pedro Street, outside the crosswalk.

One car stopped for the pair, but a pickup truck traveling in the same direction failed to do so, Leuschner said.

``It was too late to stop and he ran them over,'' Leuschner said. The mother was dead at the scene. The daughter died at a hospital.

Earlier this week, a caller tipped off police to the truck driver's identity and where to find him, Leuschner said.

When police found him at the body shop, Ramirez initially said he knew

nothing about the accident and did not drive a truck such as the one involved in the accident, Leuschner said.

But when the detective reminded Ramirez that he had received a traffic citation Citation
