The motorist who hit Slade stopped briefly and pulled to the side of the road, but then sped off, deputies said. Deputies arrested an ex-convict from Fullerton about an hour later in east Palmdale on suspicion of being the motorist.

The collision occurred about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on Avenue S about 200 feet east of the intersection of 10th Street East.

Slade was taken by ambulance to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he died from his injuries a short time later.

When deputies arrived, the motorist was gone. A description of his car was broadcast to patrol deputies.

Jason R. Spann, 36, of Fullerton was located about an hour later in east Palmdale. He was arrested on suspicion of felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law.  hit and run and was being held in lieu of Instead of; in place of; in substitution of. Investigators said had Spann stopped, he would not have been arrested because he had the right of way. State prison records show Spann had been paroled in 1999 for an Antelope Valley burglary conviction and had a 1996 conviction for possession of cocaine for sale.
