HISTORY HAS FEW OPTIONS IN CLASSIC 3 OF 4 ENTRIES CAN MAKE MARK WITH VICTORY TODAY.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

DEL MAR Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:
  • Del Mar, California
  • Del Mar, Texas
  • Del Mar High School, located in San Jose, California
  • Del Mar Racetrack, located in Del Mar, California
 - Today's $1 million Pacific Classic is short on horses but long on potential significance.

Medaglia d'Oro has only three challengers - Candy Ride, Milwaukee Brew and Fleetstreet Dancer - and Del Mar's marquee race is left with its smallest field in 13 runnings after injured Kudos was withdrawn Friday morning.

But barring a shocker shock·er

by nonstakes-winner Fleetstreet Dancer, the result of the 1 1/4-mile race for 3-year-olds and up is bound to be history-making.

Medaglia d'Oro, the nation's richest active thoroughbred with $3,254,720 in purses after seven victories in 13 career starts, can get a leg up in his coast-to-coast battle with Mineshaft mine·shaft

for top older-horse honors this season.

The 4-year-old is undefeated in 2003 after winning the Strub Stakes and Oaklawn and Whitney handicaps, the last after a nearly four-month layoff forced by a stall-accident hoof hoof, horny epidermal casing at the end of the digits of an ungulate (hoofed) mammal. In the even-toed ungulates, such as swine, deer, and cattle, the hoof is cloven; in the odd-toed ungulates, such as the horse and the rhinoceros, it is solid.  injury.

``He fought off a challenge from a very, very good horse,'' Medaglia d'Oro jockey Jerry Bailey said of the one-length Whitney victory over Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1¼ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup.  winner Volponi. ``And he's come back to work really well since then. So I'd have to say he's stepping forward. I would expect a very big race this weekend.''

For Bailey, a victory would be his first in the Pacific Classic. In his only previous attempt, he and Cigar finished second to Dare and Go in 1996, snapping Cigar's winning streak at a record-tying 16.

For Bobby Frankel, trainer of both Medaglia d'Oro and Milwaukee Brew, a victory would be his seventh in the Pacific Classic, extending a dominance unprecedented in major California races. A 1-2 finish would be the third for Frankel, who swept exactas in 1992 (Missionary Ridge-Defensive Play) and 1993 (Bertrando-Missionary Ridge).

The would-be upsetters can make marks themselves.

Candy Ride can cap a journey from Argentina to the top of the Southern California handicap division by winning. The 4-year-old is unbeaten in five starts, three in his native country before he was imported by Sidney Craig and his diet-diva wife Jenny last winter. This will be his first start at 1 1/4 miles, after a progression from 1 1/16 in his allowance-level U.S. debut to 1 1/8 on turf in Hollywood Park's American Handicap.

Like Medaglia d'Oro, Candy Ride has Hall of Famers in charge.

Julie Krone, replacing injured Gary Stevens, tries to make the Pacific Classic the biggest race to be won by a woman jockey west of New York New York, state, United States

, where Krone rode Colonial Affair to victory in the 1993 Belmont Stakes.

Ron McAnally, who has won virtually every other major race in the state, is trying to end a surprising futility in the Pacific Classic, in which none of his eight starters has finished better than fourth.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee Brew - easily overlooked as Frankel's other horse today - can at age 6 force fans to recognize him as one of the circuit's most accomplished major-race runners of recent years by adding the Pacific Classic to his back-to-back Santa Anita Handicap The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the late winter at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses three years old and up, and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during  victories.

The Pacific Classic will be run as the afternoon's fifth race, before the start of the pick-six for which Del Mar guarantees a $1 million pool.
