HIPPO SOFTWARE INC. ANNOUNCES NEW SOFTWARE THAT INTEGRATES UNIX(R) WITH OS/2(R) AND WINDOWS NT(TM)

SALT LAKE CITY, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Hippo Software Inc. today announced HIPPIX(TM), a package of commands with a programming library that allows UNIX(R) users to inexpensively integrate PCs into their UNIX networks by giving users identical tools for both platforms.
HIPPIX brings UNIX capabilities to OS/2(R) and Windows NT(TM), giving PC users the power of UNIX without having to purchase or maintain a full UNIX system. By providing UNIX tools and a programming library for the PC, HIPPIX allows developers to write UNIX programs that are source code compatible for both platforms.
HIPPIX was developed at the University of Utah's Center for Software Science, a State of Utah Center of Excellence. As part of the university's technology transfer program, HIPPIX is licensed to Hippo Software Inc., a spin-off company resulting from the university's research.
"With HIPPIX, users and developers now have a powerful, cost- effective solution for cross-platform integration. They can develop one application that runs without source code changes on all supported platforms," stated P.K. Stoll, president of Hippo Software.
 The HIPPIX Command Set
The HIPPIX command set includes more than 100 utilities implementing most of the IEEE POSIX 1003.2 and 1003.2a draft standards. General utilities include: awk- a pattern-directed scanning and processing language; grep-searches file contents for a pattern; sh- an interactive command and batch scripting language; and vi- a screen-oriented text editor. These commands allow the advanced user improved flexibility in interacting with OS/2 and NT files and processes. Also provided are various programming utilities, such as lex, yacc, and rcs, which simplify the software development process. Support for these commands on PCs greatly increases the ease of multiplatform integration and systems administration tasks.
 The HIPPIX Library
The HIPPIX programming library supports more than 90 percent of the functions of the POSIX 1003.1 System Application Programming Interface (API). All HIPPIX utilities are implemented using the functions in the programming library. Developers can use the set of more than 150 functions to implement even the most sophisticated non- graphical sections of their applications, and the resulting applications are source code compatible with POSIX-compliant UNIX systems. The HIPPIX Shared Library (DLL) is royalty-free, and developers may freely distribute it with their application.
 Price and Availability
HIPPIX is available immediately for IBM OS/2 2.0 and is fully 32-bit. HIPPIX will be available in a beta version for Microsoft Windows NT in June, with the final version released when Windows NT is available. The complete HIPPIX package of commands and programming library retails for $239. The commands can be purchased separately for $179.
Hippo Software Inc. was founded in 1991 as part of the technology transfer program at the University of Utah. Hippo Software is committed to providing the complete integration solution between UNIX and the new generation of powerful PCs.
