Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

With the Hollywood Gold Cup The Hollywood Gold Cup is a Grade I stakes race for thoroughbred horses inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. It was run as a handicap race until 1997 when it was switched to weight-for-age conditions.  contenders' major workouts complete, the only question for Skip Away Skip Away (born April 4, 1993), a gray thoroughbred race horse, was named America's Champion 3 Year Old Male in 1996 and twice (1997, 1998) named America's Champion Handicap Horse.  trainer Sonny Hine Hubert "Sonny" Hine (born January 9, 1931 in The Bronx, New York) was an American Hall of Fame Thoroughbred horse trainer best known as the trainer of 1998 U.S. Horse of the Year, Skip Away. Hine, one of horse racing's real characters, and his wife Carolyn, owner of Skip Away, claim they haven't taken a three-day vacation in 35 years of marriage. So the Hines plan to make the most of a rare visit to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  to run their popular horse against Silver Charm Silver Charm (born February 22 1994) is an American Champion Thoroughbred race horse.

Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Gary Stevens, Silver Charm won the 1997 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before falling short of the Triple Crown by placing second in the Belmont

``The track is taking us to dinner Saturday night. Maybe I'll get to go to - what do they call it? - the Farmer's Market,'' Sonny Hine said on the phone from New York New York, state, United States

At least it looks certain that Skip Away will make it to Hollywood Park, site of the 1997 Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1ΒΌ miles (2012 m) on dirt. Skip Away is booked on a Thursday-morning flight to LAX.

Tuesday morning, with jockey Jerry Bailey aboard, Skip Away breezed 6 furlongs in a quick 1:11 1/5 at Belmont Park. The effort eliminated Hine's doubts about the 5-year-old's health.

for about a day after an incident Friday in which he dumped his exercise rider while dodging a fallen horse during a gallop, and ran free for 25 minutes.

``He's really ready to run,'' Hine said Tuesday.

Silver Charm, the 1997 Kentucky Derby winner, also worked out Tuesday, going 5 furlongs in :58 3/5, the fastest of 41 at the distance at Santa Anita.

``All systems go,'' trainer Bob Baffert said from his barn.

As well as stars Skip Away, Silver Charm and Gentlemen, the Gold Cup is expected to draw Puerto Madero, Budroyale, Don't Blame Rio, probably Bagshot and possibly Mud Route. Entries will be announced Thursday.

Livening the three-way battle of the nation's richest older horses is the recent war of words between Hine and Baffert. Hine accused the Silver Charm camp of ``ducking me'' but says a quote calling Baffert a coward was taken out of context.

``Now they want me to wrestle Baffert, that's the last thing I heard,'' Hine said Tuesday. ``I could probably arm wrestle him. I'm 67 right now. I like a good meal and sitting in a chair.''
