On Sunday, about 40 hikers, some equipped with ski poles, tackled a 2.5-mile jaunt up a fire road to a picnic area and back. Hikers talked to Lockyer about a range of issues, from environmental concerns to health care.

``All of the input gets filtered into policy goals,'' Lockyer said. ``And it all adds up to being part of the greatest experiment, which is American democracy.''

Recent college graduates Jennifer Tsao, 22, of La Crescenta and Mark Techaphunphol, 23, of Woodland Hills joined the morning hike to meet Lockyer.

``We were going to read up about all these issues and stuff and try to talk to him about it, but we just woke up too late,'' Tsao said.

But even if they did not do their homework beforehand, they still joined the hike.

``You get to meet the attorney general,'' Techaphunphol said. ``It's like, hey, why not? Two-mile hike, that's not bad.''

In their backpacks, Sierra Club volunteers carried all the necessary ingredients for a picnic in the Verdugo Mountains. Hikers could dig into Verb 1. dig into - examine physically with or as if with a probe; "probe an anthill"

Sierra Club hike leader Garen Yegparian, 43, said getting public officials to join the hike is not difficult.

``It's community service and it's an opportunity that probably they don't get too much, to just strictly chat with constituents,'' Yegparian said.

Lockyer said he chats with constituents at the grocery store and over the phone. But he enjoyed the chance to tackle a hiking trail again.

``There was a time, some years back, when I was a regular,'' Lockyer said.

La Canada Flintridge Mayor Anthony Portantino and Glendale City Manager Jim Starbird are among the officials scheduled to join the Sierra Club's upcoming monthly hikes. More information is available online at www.angeles.sierraclub.org.
