HIGHWAY SAFETY REMINDER FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON A CELLULAR PHONE CAN BE A LIFE SAVER

ORANGEBURG, N.Y., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- There are more than 10 million cellular telephone users helping to make this year's holiday season a safe one on America's highways. These people, with the help of special emergency calling features, are providing extra eyes and ears for emergency response agencies.
Cellular phones and service are proven life-savers. They have improved the safety of roadways by providing cellular users the ability to call the police and emergency personnel. And, with the emergence of a new threat to motorist safety - "car-jacking" - cellular users can help police by immediately reporting such incidents.
"Cellular telephones have always been recognized as a valuable tool for reporting accidents or other roadside emergencies," said Alfred F. Boschulte, president of NYNEX Mobile Communications Company. "We encourage all cellular customers to use 911 not only this holiday season but all of the time.
When using 911, customers should tell police dispatchers:
 -- their exact location
-- that they are calling from a cellular phone
-- the nature of the emergency
-- their first and last name
-- where they can be reached for further information
Cellular service customers are also reminded to pre-program their phones' memory, or one-touch dialing features for quick retrieval of emergency numbers.
NYNEX Mobile Communications Company, a member of the NYNEX family of companies, is one of the nation's leading providers of wirefree communications services. The 1,200-employee company provides cellular telephone service to more than 370,000 customers throughout New England, New York and New Jersey.
