SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Rain soaked Santa Clarita yet again Friday with no relief in sight, prompting a flood watch through the weekend and heightening fears of mudslides in areas that burned in last summer's wildfires.

More than 1 1/2 inches of rain pelted the region Friday, with more heavy rain and high winds due today and Sunday, according to according to

Snow on the Grapevine forced a six-hour closure of Interstate 5 from Castaic to Kern County, resulting in much heavier traffic than usual on the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  as motorists opted for that route to head out of town, said Officer Wendy Hahn of the California Highway Patrol highway patrol

Snow was comparatively light on the Grapevine - just a few inches on the road, compared with the nearly 3 feet that fell earlier this week in Gorman.

``We had some spinouts this morning when the roads would get slippery, but mostly minor crashes,'' Hahn said.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County road crews were on alert for rockslides, duty that will continue on a round-the-clock basis through the weekend. The concern is the very wet two weeks has left the ground saturated and that the hillsides - especially those stripped of grass and brush by July's wildfires - could slip.

Cid Morgan, district supervisor for the area of the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  between the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, said she was especially concerned about the heavy rain expected today and Sunday because it comes with a warmer system likely to melt snow still piled high in the mountains. The phenomenon, called rain-on-snow, exacerbates flooding.

``We'll have some eyes and ears out there all weekend in case of slides or debris in the road,'' Morgan said.

Aside from the normal hazards of rainy weather, a forecast for high winds prompted a warning to keep clear of large trees. Gusts of winds can uproot trees standing in saturated soil.

Rain will decrease Sunday morning, then pick up in the evening and continue through Tuesday night.
