to get the work finished faster, Caltrans officials said.

Limiting the highway to one lane of traffic for an extra hour or two a day is hoped to cut at least a month off the time the highway must be closed completely in summer 2007, a spokeswoman said.

``They're trying to finish up a lot of the work so that the closure won't last the full three months next summer,'' Terri Kasinga said.

Beginning today, flagmen will direct traffic between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays between the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County line and Highway 2, Kasinga said.

The flagmen stop traffic in one direction so traffic in the other direction can use the only lane that is open while construction is under way. Waits are expected to be about 15 minutes, she said.

Previously, flagmen directed traffic between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

The work is adding truck lanes to two-lane Highway 138 where it climbs over the San Gabriel Mountains San Gabriel Mountains, S Calif., E and NE of Los Angeles, running c.50 mi (80 km) westward from Cajon Pass. The $44.4 million construction project is expected to be concluded in spring 2008.

Next month, the California Department of Transportation The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is a government agency in the U.S. state of California. Its mission is to improve mobility across the state. It manages the state highway system and is actively involved with public transportation systems in California.  will close entirely a three-mile section of the highway from south of the Highway 18 junction to Angeles Crest Highway The Angeles Crest Highway is a two-lane (one lane of travel in each direction) segment of California State Route 2 in the United States. The road is 66 miles in length, with its western terminus at the intersection at Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge and its eastern  to all traffic. The closure is expected to start June 19 and last through September.

To get around the closed section, motorists will be directed onto state Highway 18, U.S. Highway 395 and Interstate 15, adding about 15 miles to the normally 21-mile trip between Highway 18 and Interstate 15.

In summer 2007, the highway is expected to be closed from Angeles Crest Highway south to Hess Road, on the Interstate 15 side of the summit. Motorists will use Highway 18, U.S. 395 and Interstate 15 to get around that closure, too.

The work will add a truck lane in each direction on the northern side of the summit, and for westbound trucks on the summit's southern side.

The construction project will also widen the highway's shoulders to eight feet to give motorists a place to pull over, and realign re·a·lign
