The dam was located 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Los Angeles, California, near the city of Santa Clarita. Memorial Committee recently proposed that the highway be named in memory of 460 people who were killed when the dam broke on March 12, 1928. But the 54-mile stretch of Highway 126 is already called the Korean War Veterans Memorial Korean War Veterans Memorial: see National Parks and Monuments (table).
