About 40 of the school's 80 Latin students took the one-hour multiple choice test March 12 at the campus, said Latin and Spanish teacher Ann Robins.

``It is really an achievement,'' Robins said of the results. ``I'm really proud of them.''

The test is taken by 103,000 students in the United Sates, Canada, Australia, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland.  and the Netherlands.

The test consists of 40 questions on Latin grammar Latin, like all other ancient Indo-European languages, is highly inflectional, and so has a very flexible word order. Thus Latin is archaic in its preservation of Proto-Indo-European forms. In Latin there are five declensions of nouns and four conjugations of verbs. , Roman history and culture, given in five different levels depending on how many years of Latin a student has taken.

The gold medal went to Eddy Blancart. Students who received Magna Cum Laude awards are Jennifer Leckliter, Shawn Showers, Julie Murphy and Carlos Pinedo. Cum Laude awards went to Rachel Morris, Michael Luman, Dara Harper, Emily Dow and Travis Alvord.

After years of decline, the study of Latin is starting to increase in high schools across the United States, Robins said.

``There has been a correlation between high SAT scores and studying Latin,'' Robins said. ``Because so much of our vocabulary is Latin derived, that means that they can build the vocabulary and understand the structure of our language more. A lot of the kids are going for it for that reason.''

Taking Latin also makes it easier to learn other languages, Robins said.

``I took Latin before I took Spanish,'' Robins said. ``Spanish was a snap after I had Latin. I can read French and Italian, but I haven't actually studied the language. But because they are from Latin, it is easy to figure out what they are saying.''
