HIGHLAND SERVES NOTICE; DEFENSE WILL BE KEY IN POSTSEASON.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Highland High quietly entered Golden League football play, considered no better than a long-shot championship contender.

Littlerock was the clear-cut choice to repeat its 1998 dream season.

Palmdale was 1-4 in the preseason, but the Falcons were thought of as a threat because the losses had been to quality opponents.

And then there was Highland, which didn't turn many heads in finishing its nonleague schedule 2-3. The Bulldogs beat the teams they were supposed to and lost to the superior opponents. But Highland knew something the rest of the Golden League didn't, and the Bulldogs will carry the league's banner as its No. 1 seed when the Southern Section Division III

``At the beginning of the season, we all got together and we told each other that we could win the Golden League. We just had to believe that we could do it,'' said senior linebacker Paul Soto, the catalyst of a rugged defense that dominated in league play.

``Now we feel like we can win the Division III title too.''

In last Friday's title-clinching 16-3 win at Antelope Valley, the offense was shut down by the Antelopes. But on the other side of the ball, Highland suffocated the Antelopes, forcing five turnovers, four in the second half that led to nine crucial points.

In five Golden League games, the Bulldogs allowed a total of 30 points. Soto credited the challenges Highland encountered in nonleague play as a primer for the games that mattered most.

But Clovis West scored just 36 points against the Bulldogs one season after the nationally ranked Golden Eagles pounded Highland 71-17.

``We played tough teams,'' said Soto, who forced three fumbles and intercepted a pass in the win over Antelope Valley. ``When you think about it, we faced one of the best running backs, and one of the best teams in the country.''

High five: The Golden League struggled somewhat in 1999. The six teams' combined nonleague record was just 11-19, but when it came time to selecting a Division III wild-card team, 3-7 Quartz Hill got the nod over Burroughs (3-7) of the Foothill League, Glendale (3-7) of the Pacific League and Crespi (1-9) of the Mission League. The Rebels might have gotten the nod with a quality win over Canyon, which was the Foothill League's fourth playoff selection.

The reward for Quartz Hill's first playoff berth since going three-plus years without a league victory was drawing top seed and defending section champion Hart. The Indians beat Quartz Hill 56-18 in the season opener.

Improving defense: Antelope Valley's defense had been suspect much of the season, but the Antelopes played inspired football against Highland with the Golden League title on the line.

The Bulldogs managed just 269 yards of offense. A.V. (4-6) will need a similarly strong effort Friday night when the Golden League's No. 2 team plays host to Muir, the Pacific League's No. 3 team.

``Our defense played one hell of a football game,'' A.V. coach Brent Newcomb said after the loss to Highland. ``We're proud of our guys after going 2-7-1 last year to make the playoffs.''

Tough task: For the second consecutive year, Littlerock opens the postseason against a Mission League opponent but in reversed roles.

Last year a 10-0 Lobos team hosted Crespi, an at-large entry, and was shocked 17-7 on its home field.

Consecutive upset losses to Lancaster and Palmdale dropped Littlerock to the fourth spot in the Golden League.
