HIGHLAND RUNNERS ARE AMONG AREA'S BEST.

The Antelope Valley
 have established themselves among the best in the area.

Highland High of Palmdale junior Jeremy Acosta has taken first place this year at the Seaside Seaside.

 in Ventura and at the Kenny Staub Invitational in Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. .

Acosta, whose Bulldogs are ranked No. 6 in the Daily News coverage area, clocked 15 minutes, 6 seconds to win the seaside race in early September, and finished in 15:55 on Sept. 30 on the three-mile course at Staub.

Acosta and Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta sophomore Zack Torres traded elbows for much of the race at Staub before Acosta pulled away in the final 100 meters to defeat Torres by 7 seconds.

``I had heard about Torres before that race, so I expected him to be a good runner,'' said Acosta, who was briefly nudged into a bush by Torres at the two-mile mark. ``But he surprised me a little with how aggressively he ran. I was definitely impressed im·press 1

Considered one of the top juniors in the state, Acosta hopes to qualify for the State Meet in Fresno this November, but doesn't figure to realistically challenge for the state title until next season.

The other top runners on the Highland boys' team include James Snyder, Jared Jacques, Edgar Martinez and Josh Johanson.

On the girls' side, Highland senior Caitlin Fitzgerald finished in seventh place in the girls' seeded race last week at the Clovis Invitational in Fresno.

Fitzgerald, who clocked 18:24 on the 5,000-meter course, is also expected to quality for the State Meet this year in Fresno, where she hopes to improve upon last year's 18th-place finish in the Div. I race.

Fitzgerald and her No. 5 Bulldogs will join the boys Saturday at the nationally respected Mount San Antonio Mount San Antonio, better known to most in Los Angeles as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, USA and the highest point in Los Angeles County. Mount San Antonio has two summits.  College Invitational in Walnut walnut, common name for some members of the Juglandaceae, a family of chiefly deciduous, resinous trees characterized by large and aromatic compound leaves.
