HIGHLAND GAINS GROUND COACH SAYS TEAM NEEDS TO IMPROVE.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Staff Writer

PALMDALE -- Highland High's football team's dreadful 0-4 start included a defensive meltdown meltdown

In 1990, Moreno Valley was California's fastest-growing city, with a population increase of more than 300% between 1980 and 1990, but major reductions  in a game Highland led late in the third quarter.

In its first two games, Highland had 27 penalties assessed against it. In its Week 1, 34-26 loss to Barstow, Highland's offense played well and its defense sputtered. The reverse was the case in its Week 4, 7-6 loss to Inglewood.

And although Highland (2-4, 2-0 Golden League) has since garnered some momentum after opening league with victories over Littlerock and Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

, coach Jim Root doesn't want his players to forget the stretch when from one week to next the team seemed to find a way to lose.

``I would prefer kids remember those games,'' Root said. ``Bad things can happen if you play badly, and it's important that they remember that.''

Root said Friday's 11-0 victory over Antelope Valley illustrated that although his team had progressed since its early-season struggles, there is still significant room for improvement.

Highland fumbled seven times against the Antelopes, but recovered four.

``Luckily for us, we were able to keep plugging away, but it really hurt our offensive production,'' Root said. ``You can't make errors like that and expect to win.''

Root acknowledged that his team will need to play its best game if it has any chance in Friday's pivotal league showdown against Lancaster (4-2, 3-0).

Highland has a chance to move into a first-place tie with Palmdale (5-1, 3-0) with a victory.

It will not be an easy task though. Lancaster has won three in a row and is coming off a 34-7 thrashing thrashing: see threshing.

``They are going to be a very tough,'' Root said. ``(Lancaster coach) Jeff Cortez has a well-coached football team and he always has. They are going to be an extremely well coached and well prepared team because he is such an outstanding coach.

``We're going to need to play at another level just to be on the same field as them.''

Dominant defense:

Crucial to Highland's turnaround has been its outstanding defensive play.

After allowing 122 points the first three weeks, Highland has allowed just 15 points in its last three games, with the only touchdowns allowed over that stretch coming on special teams and against its second team defense.

``Our defense has really been doing a remarkable job,'' Root said. ``I can't find too many faults with the way they've played.''

``They've been really big surprises for us,'' Root said.

``Outstanding effort'':

Palmdale senior defensive back Deon Edwards set a school record with 46 points in the program's in-house grading system for defensive players in Friday's 56-0 victory over Littlerock.

Edwards scored two defensive touchdowns and had two interceptions, a fumble recovery, a pass deflection deflection /de·flec·tion/ (de-flek´shun) deviation or movement from a straight line or given course, such as from the baseline in electrocardiography.
