The Highland High boys' basketball team entered Tuesday's showdown against Golden League front-runner Palmdale on a three-game losing streak after a pair of league setbacks to Knight and Lancaster and a nonleague loss to Price of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Another loss would have been disastrous. It was a must-win situation.

And the Bulldogs responded with one of their better efforts of the season, defeating the host Falcons, 59-52, to once again make themselves relevant in the league standings, and perhaps move back into the hunt for a league title.

``Highland came out with a sense of urgency, more so than we did, and remained focused the whole game,'' Palmdale coach Jon Konrad said. ``They stuck to their guns. They're a high-quality team.''

Things don't get any easier for the Bulldogs (14-9, 4-3), ranked No. 15 by the Daily News this week. They play fifth place Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

``We're not going to roll for anyone, and these next two games are big for us. Huge,'' Highland coach Jeff Smith said. ``There's no automatic wins in this league.

``In fact, we've stopped worrying about all the outside interferences like who's in first, second and third place. We've been focused solely on us. We're concentrating on winning.''

``If you would have asked me before the season started if I would've been happy being tied for first place, I would've definitely said yes,'' Knight coach Tom Hegre said. ``It's hard to argue with our success so far but we also know that there's a long way to go.''

``You can't underestimate anyone in this league because if you do you're going to drop a game or two,'' Hegre said. ``The title is still up for grabs. It's a like a crapshoot, but we like our team and our chances.''
