HIGH-FLYING FAIR OPENS FOR 12-DAY RUN.

VENTURA -- Thousands of people enjoyed carnival rides, music and exhibit halls as the annual Ventura County Fair opened Wednesday at its traditional Seaside Park venue.

Linda Olson, 58, a Ventura native who now lives in Arizona, was in California visiting relatives and decided to check out the fair with her daughters and grandchildren GRANDCHILDREN, domestic relations. ``We didn't realize it was $1 day. There are so many of us, it would have cost a lot to get in,'' she said. ``It's a great deal. It's a great fair. I've been coming since 1949.''

Granddaughter Ellie Olson, 8, was about to get on a small Ferris wheel Ferris wheel, amusement park ride. It consists of a power-operated wheel that is about 50 ft (15 m) in diameter. It has two rims that are parallel to and equidistant from the shaft about which the wheel rotates. , but pointed to a 100-foot-tall spiral slide in the distance that she had ridden last year.

``I like that slide,'' she said. ``It makes me feel happy.''

A giant Ferris wheel closer to the beach is known for giving riders spectacular views of the ocean and even the Channel Islands on a clear day.

Some of the rides have sea themes, including a miniature whale ride and a Viking-like ship ride called the Sea Dragon Sea´ drag´on

. There's also a windsurfing windsurfing, also called boardsailing or sailboarding, water sport that employs a board-and-sail device and combines elements of sailing and surfing. The sport was developed in the United States during the 1960s by the Californians Jim Drake, a sailor, and Hoyle  ride that doesn't really involve surfing, but lifts the riders into the air, turning them in all directions.

``It was fun. It hangs you upside-down, then you spin around,'' said Bethany Loehr of Wichita, Kan., whose family happened to be vacationing in Ventura when they discovered it was opening day at the fair. ``At one point, I was scared.''

, brought 38 children from the West Hills area. One of their first stops was the youth exhibit hall, made up entirely of things made by and for children.

``This is our first year at the fair, and they are very impressed. They like to touch,'' Renner noted as she watched the children converge on several tables filled with hundreds of wooden toys made by Gene West of Oxnard.

Ventura fair
