HIGH-AVAILABILITY, COST-EFFECTIVE STORAGE: IBM FIRST IN THE
INDUSTRY TO SHIP IN VOLUME RAID-5 DRIVES FOR THE AS/400
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that this week it will begin volume shipment of the high availability models of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem, making IBM the first in the industry to volume ship a storage system for the Application System/400(A) (AS/400/A/) that uses an implementation of RAID-5. RAID-5, or Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks, is a storage technique that will significantly expand the AS/400's data storage and availability options.
"We are extremely pleased to be the first in the industry to provide our AS/400 commercial customers with an innovative implementation of RAID-5 in the volumes they require. We expect to ship several hundred subsystems over the next few weeks," said Ray S. AbuZayyad, IBM vice president and general manager of ADSTAR.
"With the RAID capabilities of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem, IBM is enabling customers like Egghead Software to spend less money than it takes to use other storage techniques for protection against storage device failure. At the same time, this storage subsystem virtually eliminates a system outage in the event that a single drive fails. These capabilities are critical to users," said Bradley Brown, vice president of Information Services for Egghead Software of Issaquah, Washington, an early user of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem.
The 9337 Disk Array Subsystem is an advanced data storage unit that gives AS/400 customers uninterrupted access to essential business information should a disk drive or power supply fail. This is an attractive low-cost solution for businesses that depend on continuous access to information, such as insurance and retail companies. The 9337 also is less expensive than mirroring or duplicating data.
