HIGH SCHOOLS ADAPT FOR HOLIDAY; AREA CAMPUSES RESCHEDULE EVENTS SET FOR JEWISH YOM KIPPUR.

Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

Yom Kippur Yom Kippur [Heb.,=day of atonement], in Judaism, the most sacred holy day, falling on the 10th day of the Jewish month of Tishri (usually late September or early October).  administrators also discovered they had a home football game on Yom Kippur. They were able to change it, but Saugus - playing an away game against Pasadena - was unable to do the same.

Valencia rescheduled its Friday night game against Quartz Hill. The contest, originally set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Canyon High School Canyon High School can refer to:

``Our game and dance now are both scheduled for after sundown on Saturday,'' Priesz said. Yom Kippur will begin at sunset Oct. 10 and run 24 hours. ``So we have no events scheduled between Friday sundown and Saturday sundown,'' he said.

``We had originally planned to have the homecoming game on Friday, but when we discovered it was Yom Kippur, we changed it to Saturday,'' Priesz added. The homecoming dance will follow the game in the Valencia High School Valencia High School may refer to:

Athletic contests are scheduled several months in advance. Priesz said officials of the Quartz Hill campus were cooperative about changing the game date at the last minute.

The game was moved from a Friday night to a Thursday night, ``even though we don't have anyone of the Jewish faith on our varsity team,'' said Mike Herrington, Hart athletic director.

``Loyola wasn't real happy about it,'' Herrington said, noting officials at that school didn't like the idea of traveling so far to an away game on a school night. Also, he said, Loyola had a college-career night planned for that same Thursday that conflicted with the newly rescheduled football game.

``These last-minute changes were rough,'' Herrington said. ``I wish they had mentioned (Yom Kippur) back in March, when we made these schedules. Now, we're aware of it and we're going to be sensitive to those issues in scheduling.''

On average, Hart draws 3,000 to 6,000 fans to its home games, Herrington noted.

Saugus, meanwhile, will be playing Pasadena at 11 a.m. Oct. 11, right in the middle of the Yom Kippur observance. Pasadena had been playing all its home games at the Pasadena City College stadium, but that field is unavailable for the next two years because of renovations in progress there, said Pasadena Principal Ben Ramirez.

Canyon is the only local high school that came out unscathed.

Its home game against Palmdale had always been scheduled for Oct. 9, a Thursday night. The Cowboys, who usually play their games Friday nights, had to juggle their schedule that week because they share their stadium with other high schools.

Therefore, the school now plays its home games on a practice field on the high school campus. A contract between the school district and the city stipulates the games must be played during the day.

Yom Kippur is the end of the 10-day High Holy Days that begin with today's observance of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year.
