HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: SAUGUS ENJOYING SUCCEESS AS `THREE M'S' DOMINATE.

Byline: KEVIN CONNELLY Kevin Connelly was born in Middlesbrough, England. He is an impressionist comedian, and after dinner speaker and is probably most famous for his role on the popular BBC television programme 'Dead Ringers'.   Special to the Daily News

Saugus High's girls' track and field trio of Shannon Murakami, Jeanette McConnell and Lauren Moore has been such a dominant force in recent years that a creative nickname is only fitting.

"Three Amigos AMIGOS Advanced Mobile Integration in General Operating Systems " is already taken, and the "Three Stooges Three Stooges

" isn't quite appropriate, so coaches and teammates call them the "Three M's."

and the area leader at 800, 1,600, and 3,200 meters this season, sometimes overshadows her teammates. It doesn't diminish the accomplishments of McConnell and Moore, who are aiming for the June 2-3 state championships at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century. .

McConnell has posted area bests in the discus (145 feet) and shot put (43-63/4) this season, and Moore is No. 1 in the triple jump (36-7).

"It's so cool to be on a team with so much talent," said Moore, a senior who is being recruited by UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. . "We're all friends. We talk at school and throughout track season."

Moore apparently is the only M' without superstitions.

Murakami sports blue soccer shorts from grade school between races for good luck, and McConnell known as "Socks" by teammates says she has not worn a pair of matching socks since seventh grade.

"I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

about that sock thing," Moore joked. "I guess it works for her."

Saugus, which owns area bests in six events this season, is ranked No. 1 by the Daily News and last week clinched at least a tie for the Foothill League dual-meet title, its first championship since 1982 more than five years before the oldest girls on the team were born.

Saugus (4-0) needs a win today over Burbank (1-3) to win the title outright.

"This season has been so gratifying grat·i·fy

," Moore said. "A lot of people have underestimated Saugus since I've been here. This could be just the beginning."

Comparisons: The state meet is a little more than a month away, and track and field athletes are beginning to gauge how they measure up against other elite athletes from California.

Three local athletes are No. 1 the in state: Taft of Woodland Hills senior Jamere Holland (100, 10.36), Saugus junior Shannon Murakami (800, 2:10.03) and Rio Mesa of Oxnard junior Josh Harrison (long jump, 23-5).
