After receiving its highest seed in program history, Eagle Rock High's boys' tennis team was awarded a first-round bye in the City Section playoffs.

The result was a convincing 22 -7 victory and a berth in Monday's semifinals at Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. "Having lost last year really helped us out this year," said Jacobson, whose team brought a 14-0 record into last year's quarterfinal match against Taft of Woodland Hills and was beaten 15 -14. "We were able to point to that for motivation.

"Taft was a good team, but we wanted to right the wrong from last year. We prepared much more intensely Monday than we did last season, and we felt it was within us to win the match."

Eagle Rock (15-1) - which plays No. 2 Granada Hills ort 10th-seeded Venice - put the pressure on Cleveland (7-8) by building a 12-4 advantage in singles.

The Cavaliers' only singles victories came from Andrew Ong.

J.C. Leonardo, playing singles for the first time, contributed three points for the Eagles, who won twice in the opening round of doubles competition to clinch Clinch, river, c.300 mi (480 km) long, formed by the junction of two forks in SW Va., and flowing generally SW across E Tenn. to the Tennessee River at Kingston.  the victory.

Chris Trinh and Joseph Valentino swept their three doubles sets for Eagle Rock.

"I stressed to all of them to play like there's no tomorrow, or else their season is over," Jacobson said. "This is a tremendous achievement for a little school like Eagle Rock."
