HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING NOTEBOOK: LOCALS TO LEAD SOCAL IN WESTERN ZONE.

Six Canyons Aquatics swimmers played a major role last August in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  winning its third consecutive Western Zone championship.

Two veterans from that group, along with three newcomers, will be counted on to have a big influence in Southern California's bid for a fourth straight title at this year's competition.

Bob Hwang and K.T. Livingstone, two of the talented young swimmers in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , were repeat selections to this year's Southern California team, which is scheduled to compete Aug. 8-12 at Central High in Fresno.

They will be joined by Canyons' Adria Morales, Allison Morales, Asher Garcia and coach Michael Bechtholdt. Kirsten Justice is an alternate.

Last year, Samantha Asencio, Sarah Colvin, Riley Mita, Alex Ngan and coach Jeff Conwell helped Southern California defeat Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  for the championship in Kearns, Utah Kearns was named after Utah's U.S. Senator Thomas Kearns 1862-1918. Livingstone and Hwang were two of the Canyons swimmers who competed this past weekend at the 13th annual Janet Evans Janet Elizabeth Evans (born August 28, 1971) is a record-breaking American competitive swimmer.

Born in Placentia, California, Evans started competitive swimming as a child. By the age of 11 she was setting National Age Group records in the longer events.

Valencia's John Pedrini had the best individual finish of any Canyons swimmer, qualifying 23rd in the 100 breaststroke in Sunday's prelims. He decided not to compete in the evening finals.

Former Canyons and Saugus High standout John Criste, now a senior at Mission Viejo, also competed at the final meet on the U.S. summer Grand Prix circuit Grand Prix Circuit is a motor racing computer game released for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC.  title last year in the 200-meter breaststroke, defended his championship Saturday by holding off a late surge from Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics' Ivan Barnes and Stanford Swimming's Chris Ash to prevail in a time of 2 minutes, 20.37 seconds.

Criste, now competing for Irvine Novaquatics, placed eighth Sunday in the 100 breaststroke.

Another former Canyons standout, Gabe Woodward, had a strong showing during the four-day event.

Woodward, a former All-American at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  and member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team who now competes for Bakersfield Swimming, took fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 in the final tune-up before the ConocoPhillips National Championships in August in Irvine.

Before Canyons hosts the Junior Olympics Aug. 2-6 at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, 24 of the club's swimmers will travel to Bakersfield to compete Thursday through Sunday in the Western Gold Sectional Championships.

Scheduled to compete for Canyons are: Lisa Andrade, Konrad Antoniuk, Asencio, Roxy Camuso, Michael Chiu, Colvin, Jordan Danny, Garcia, Chelsea Griffiths, Askhaun Hami, Maggie Hanson, Kasey Hartsock, Hwang, Hanna Kim, Rachael Krager, Ryan Kristensen, Livingstone, Lizette Patterson, Pedrini, Sarah Pino, Kaitlyn Salovich, Adriana Silva, Chris Weber and Justin Wellins.
