Some workshop topics were new and hadn't been done before. For instance, Quartz Hill Chamber of Commerce President Lee Barron was invited to speak because students said they were interested in careers in business. Another new topic was single-parent families, a request that surprised Robles. He found that there's about 700 students at Quartz Hill, or about one-fifth of the school's enrollment, who come from single-parent families. ``There are issues such as assistance with homework. Sometimes they have to be at home to address care for younger siblings,'' Robles said.
