Staff Writer There is no shortage of good competition in area boys' golf this season, and the battle for postseason berths is going to leave some exceptionally talented players out of a league championship or even the Southern Section individual playoffs. The Foothill awards an automatic berth to its scoring leader in regular-season play that ends Wednesday at Griffith Park Harding, and a 72.0 average was good for only a share of that league lead entering this week. That level of high intensity is just business as usual in the Foothill and Marmonte leagues. UNLV-bound Brett Kanda, the latest in a remarkable run of top golfers at Flintridge Prep - which sent two others to the Division I college ranks in the past nine years - also is a four-year starter and upped the league ante by twice shooting 68 in winning last year's title. Geyer, averaging less than a stroke over par this season, thinks it will take a total of six to seven strokes under par to win the two-round competition on Brookside's 6,046-yard, par-70 E.O. Nay course. ``You can do that on that course if you hit the right spots,'' he said. Kanda is looking to shoot a bit lower after finishing 6-under-par last year with his 68-68 effort on Brookside's E.O. Nay and 6,732-yard, par-72 C.W. Koiner courses. ``My goal is 8-10 under for the tournament,'' he said. ``That's not too out of reach the way I've been playing.'' No one in the area has scored better this season than Kanda, who is 9-under-par in his senior year. ``I've matured a lot this year,'' he said. ``My temperament temperament, in music, the altering of certain intervals from their acoustically correct values to provide a system of tuning whereby music can move from key to key without unacceptably impure sonorities. is better. Not that he has had that many bad shots in a season of high achievement and higher expectations. ``I want to win it all,'' Kanda said, speaking not just of league but Southern Section, Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. High hopes, but his game is sound and he already has reached three section finals, one Southern California final and a U.S. Junior Amateur final. Geyer has yet to reach a section final, but he took a big step with his game last year when he qualified for the State Open. ``It was probably one of the best experiences I had,'' he said. ``To stand next to those guys who do this for a living, to see how I can almost keep up with them and to see how good they are.'' He expects another good experience Thursday, when he and Kanda conclude their league careers. No matter what happens, they'll have plenty to remember.
