HIGH SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: GOLF IS A GRIND FOR HART SENIOR GRIT, DETERMINATION KEYS TO HIS SUCCESS.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

OXNARD - Aaron Fuller calls Joe Greiner the best high school golfer he has seen this year, but Fuller adds he might be biased, since he has coached Greiner for four seasons at Hart High of Newhall.

Mike Krose, however, has no rooting interest in Hart. Rather, the opposite is true. His Burroughs of Burbank team was Hart's main challenger this season for the Foothill League title, and Krose's best player, Jeff Looby, was one of Greiner's top rivals in league and postseason play - most recently in last week's Southern Section team playoff opener.

Looby had arguably his best round of the season in that Northern Divisional at Camarillo's difficult Sterling Hills Golf Club Hills Golf Club is a golf club located in Mölndal near Gothenburg in Sweden. The 18-hole course, designed by Arthur Hills, was opened in 2004. External links

, hitting the ball consistently well and putting even better in a 2-under-par 69 that included seven birdies.

It wound up good for only a share of medalist honors, as Greiner matched that score seemingly with willpower. Overcoming erratic ball-striking with brilliant play on the greens, the Greens, the

left-handed senior took just 24 putts to patch together his fifth round in the 60s this year and his eighth in two seasons.

``Joe's very, very focused,'' Krose said. ``When he's not doing one part of his game well, he's able to make up for it with the other parts.''

Greiner gets high marks for grit from others, as well.

``His name should be Joe Grinder Grinder

He also files numerous sports reports for the station's various weekday newscasts. , who still was raving a week later about Greiner's 69 at Sterling Hills.

``He couldn't hit a green to save his life, and (then) he was just knocking it stiff. He was in a lateral hazard on No. 3, an impossible shot, and he almost drained it from the hazard, then made the putt to save par. If there is a definition of grinder, that's him.''

Said coach Rusty Swisher swisher Sexology A regional term for a really queer queer, not that there's anything wrong with that  of school-district rival Valencia: ``Joe never says die. He's always in the game.''

Fuller said Greiner's ability to grind out a good score no matter how well or poorly he is playing is what makes him special and will make him even better in college, once his ball-striking catches up to his grit.

``You watch him hit on the range and you don't think he's such a great player,'' the Hart coach said. ``But ask any kid he plays against and they'll tell you he can flat-out score.''

Greiner, who seems to play better the greater the pressure, was grinding it out like a fine jeweler Monday at Oxnard's River Ridge River Ridge is the name of more than one location.

``I need to hit the ball better,'' Greiner said. ``Long-iron shots have held me back. But the putting is good, and I've played pretty well this season. I've been real consistent and shot some good rounds, so I'm pretty happy. I'd just like to make it to state and play well there.''

That would be an accomplishment, even for a league as distinguished as the Foothill, which has been one of the area's strongest alignments since 1990 thanks largely to the golf talent in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. .

And that's not even counting Hart, where coaches Fuller and the late Dennis Ford combined to produce 13 of the past 15 Foothill team champions.

If school records are any barometer, Greiner belongs with that all-star alumni group.

``He's broken every school record except for the league scoring record David Cape set for us last year,'' Fuller said of Greiner, a four-year varsity starter whose Foothill scoring averages of 75, 72, 70 and 71 have enabled him to join Valencia's Christianson as the league's only four-time all-league players.

What Fuller likes about Greiner as much as his scoring consistency is his leadership and attitude.

``He's very serious, but has a unique ability to root for his competitors,'' Fuller said. ``He's very talented, but he was also the glue that held our team together. He sacrificed his game at times to teach other players how to behave. He's just a consummate team player.''

of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Golf Club, where last summer he shot 64 to qualify for the national junior PGA Championship The PGA Championship (often referred to as the U.S. PGA Championship outside of North America) is an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers Association of America as part of the PGA Tour. .

``He was 1-over par through 12 holes and he saw we needed to go lower, so he started going for birdies on every hole,'' Fuller said of his two-year captain. ``That 79 was his highest score of the year and he could have turned that to even par, but he took one for the team trying to shoot a 66 to get us to the next stage. He's carried us all year.''

It was a philosophy Greiner learned as a freshman from the most recent of the Hart legends he grew up watching and hoping to emulate.

Greiner considered himself lucky to play alongside Edick, who was completing his Hart career. Greiner has attempted to bring the same work ethic and team consciousness Edick brought to every practice or match.

``He was a great leader and a great worker and it was a lot of fun when he was on the team,'' Greiner said of Edick, who came as close as any player in Hart history to winning a postseason title - losing the CIF/SCGA championship in a playoff the year before Greiner arrived at Hart.

``We all tried to focus a little more because of him,'' Greiner said. ``He was a good person to be around.''

Fuller likely will be telling future Hart teams the same about Greiner - ``by far the best player I've had'' - but the Hart coach hopes he won't have to use the past tense until after next month's state championship.
