Last year, Katelyn Miller would've just been happy to get on the field for her high school team. On Tuesday afternoon, she stood out on a field filled with the area's best players.

The Camarillo High senior hit a two-run home run in the second inning to set the tone for the West in a 7-0 victory over the East in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
Classic softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  all-star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  at Birmingham High of Lake Balboa.

``I was totally surprised,'' Miller said of being named the MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. . ``There are so many great players here.''

Miller had an up-and-down career at Camarillo. As a freshman, she made a huge impact, hitting six home runs after being called up from the junior varsity junior varsity

during the season. But she struggled with consistency as a sophomore and junior, often times finding herself on the bench.

This past summer she worked on her swing with her brother, Josh, and came back with renewed confidence. She played well enough as a senior to earn a spot as a recruited walk-on at Oregon State.

``Her confidence went way up this year. She played like she had nothing to lose,'' said her teammate, and fellow all-star Lauren Erb.

Miller and Erb combined to go 2 for 5 with four RBIs on a triple and a home run. As impressive as the Camarillo connection was, another group of teammates gave them a run for their money.

. Mejia, who will play for Michigan State next year, drove a booming home run over the center-field fence as part of the West's three-run fifth inning. Enea, who will attend Florida, had two line-drive doubles. Teammate Megan Miller earned the win, giving up one hit and striking out seven in four innings of work.

The East team managed only three hits off the West in the nine-inning game. Burroughs' of Burbank's Kimmy White, Saugus' Sarah Hooper and Alemany of Mission Hills' Miranda Ponce had the only hits.

Glendale's Heather Brusokas made several sparkling defensive plays, including a highlight-reel double-play in the eighth inning. Brusokas grabbed a ground-ball deflection deflection /de·flec·tion/ (de-flek´shun) deviation or movement from a straight line or given course, such as from the baseline in electrocardiography.

--Home-run derby: Mejia won the home-run contest before the game, which came as a surprise to no one considering Mejia came within one home run of tying the state single-season (16) and career (37) home-run records.

Mejia hit eight home runs in the championship round, but got a strong challenge from Calabasas' Samantha Marder, who blasted seven out of the yard in the preliminary round.

``Sam was really hitting them. I thought she was going to put up 20.

She put the pressure on me,'' Mejia said. ``In the second round, I think I just closed my eyes and got lucky.''

Marder was so strong in the first round of the contest, Mejia nearly didn't qualify for the championship round. With six outs, she had only two home runs. She then hit three straight pitches over the fence to finish with five and move on to the next round.

Alemany's Sara Ramirez and San Fernando's Adriana Harrington each hit two home runs in the opening round.
