HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: ECR, MEJIA ROLL OVER BIRMINGHAM EL CAMINO REAL 8, BIRMINGHAM 0.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

Perhaps when El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

But the Michigan State-bound senior shortstop continues to dominate at the high school level, and she displayed just about all the tools that have wowed scouts for years in Friday's 8-0 West Valley League victory over visiting Birmingham of Lake Balboa.

Mejia went 3 for 4 with a double, a homer and five RBIs, and also made two outstanding defensive plays.

She took away a single from Birmingham's D.J. Jeppson leading off the fourth inning, fielding a grounder up the middle and then completing the play with an off-balance throw to first.

With one out in the seventh, Mejia backhanded a ball three steps to her left and made a powerful and accurate throw to first to retire Dorothy Morentin.
