The rivalry between Saugus' Nick Delio and Valencia's Louis Amira was supposed to be settled in Foothill League play. Both had solid junior seasons, but Amira edged his friend and rival by six strokes in the individual race for league MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. .

Monday afternoon, the rivalry resumed on a much larger stage, as Delio earned medalist honors with a 5-under 67 at the Southern Section Northern Division individual qualifier at Alisal River Golf Course in Solvang.

Amira, the area's top individual finisher last season, shot a 73 and needed to birdie the first hole of a nine-man playoff play·off also play-off

``I'm really happy for him,'' Amira said. ``I wished there could've been co-MVP's of the league this year. It was definitely motivation playing against him this year, I think it made both of us better.''

Considering how he started the day, it was impressive Amira even had a shot to qualify. He double-bogeyed his first hole of the day, essentially spotting the field two strokes, but rallied to get back to 1 under by his 17th hole.

Right before he played that hole, a maintenance man watered the green on the par-4. Amira's shot hit in front of the pin and hydroplaned off the green and he carded another double-bogey to finish 1 over.

``It was one of those things where a lot of experience has taught me that no matter how badly I start off, there's still 17holes and four hours left of golf,'' Amira said. ``It was unfortunate, but I think I battled back from adversity well.''

Amira, Quartz Hill's Mike Gideon, Hart's Johnny MacArthur, La Canada's David Lipsky David Lipsky (born 20 July 1965 in New York City) is a novelist, journalist, and short story writer.
