HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: OAKS CHRISTIAN GETS ANOTHER SHOT.

After shooting a 17-under, 343 at the Frontier League championships earlier this month, it appeared the Oaks Christian of Westlake Village boys' golf team was peaking at the right time.

A week later, the Lions came up one stroke short of advancing to the Southern Section team championship.

This morning, Oaks Christian will have another shot at its first sectional title as Michael Casca and Josh Ziska compete in the Southern Section individual championships at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs, where the top 28 finishers will advance to the CIF/SCGA championship next week at the SCGA Masters Course in Murrieta.

``That's what we have left now,'' Oaks Christian coach Tom Placke said. ``But you really only need to be in the top 28, so that's the goal for (today).''

--Youth is served: Two of the most consistent individual players in the past month have been Oak Park sophomore Alex Kang and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City freshman Glen Scher.

Kang was the medalist at the Northern Divisonal two weeks ago, shooting a 3-under 68 at Sterling Hills. He qualified for this morning's tournament with an even-par 72 in Solvang.

Scher, the Mission League individual winner, also qualified with a 72.

``He handles himself very well.'' Harvard-Westlake coach Scott Wood said of Scher. ``He hit one ball in water and then hit one out of bounds, but he maintained his composure and did what he had to do to qualify. He's hanging in there with a lot of veteran guys.''

--Friendships and rivalries renewed: Valencia's Louis Amira, who was runner-up to Murrieta Valley's Rickie Fowler at the SCGA championship last year, is probably the area's best hope for a title, but he'll have to beat his friend Fowler.

``We joke with each other all the time,'' Amira said of his friendship with Fowler, who has said he will play for UCLA in college. ``We play together a lot in tournaments.''
