PALM SPRINGS -- There's a reason shirts like the one Michael Casca wore Monday to the Southern Section individual championship at Canyon Country Club find their way to the clearance rack.

There wasn't much chance of missing the Oaks Christian junior in his pink, yellow, green and blue pastel checkered polo shirt. Fortunately, what the shirt lacked in style, Casca made up for with substance.

Casca turned in the best performance of all area competitors with a 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for sixth place and earn a spot in next week's CIF/SCGA championship at the SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association

``I walked in the Polo store last week to buy some new shirts for the summer and saw this one on sale for like $10,'' he joked.

After struggling to find his game earlier in the season, he decided to stop pressing so hard for perfection and put more focus on having fun.

Casca also shot a 2-under 70 at the Alisal River Course in Solvang in qualifying for today's championship. Earlier this month, he shot a 6-under 66 at Buenaventura Country Club in Ventura as part of Oaks Christian's team score of 343, believed to be one of the lowest in area history, at the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. The top 28 players not on one of the four teams that qualified at the Southern Section team championships advanced to next week's tournament.

Casca led a group of four area players in qualifying. Saugus' Nick Delio and Royal of Simi Valley's Matt Hoffenberg both shot even-par 72 and Oaks Christian's Josh Ziska advanced on the first hole of an eight-man playoff of players tied at 74. Hart's Johnny MacArthur also finished with a 74, but he three-putted on the first playoff hole and is the second alternate for next week's tournament.Valencia's Louis Amira finished one stroke off the cut line with a 75. Amira finished second to Fowler at the SCGA championship last season and has been one of the area's best golfers this season, but he struggled Monday, missing six fairways and dropping only one birdie.
