HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEW -- OFFENSIVE LINEMEN: H.-W.'S MARTIN A NATURAL UCLA COMMIT, WHO WAS ACCEPTED TO HARVARD, HAS GROWN INTO ROLE AS A LEADER.

Staff Writer

Some kids are just born to play football.

Just ask Jane Howard-Martin, mother of Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's Jonathan Martin Jonathan Martin (1782 – 1838) was an English arsonist, famous for burning down York Minster in 1829.

Martin was born at Highside House, near Hexham, in 1782, one of the twelve children of William Fenwick Martin and Isabella, née Thompson.
, the Daily News' No.1 offensive lineman.

"When we first brought Jonathan home from the hospital, he was too big for all his little baby outfits," Howard-Martin said. "We had to cut the feet out because that was the only way he could fit into them."

At 13, Martin was already 6-foot-2 and close to 200 pounds -- too big for Pop Warner Pop Warner refers to

"I remember in eighth grade trying to diet down to make weight for Pop Warner -- I almost did it, but not quite," Martin said.

When Martin finally got a chance to play football, he proved to be a natural.

Martin also has been accepted to Harvard -- he would be a fourth- generation Harvard man -- but football is his passion.

"It was a tough decision, but to play football at UCLA, you just can't turn down an opportunity like that," Martin said.

He wears UCLA gear every day, but there's no question he's focused on his senior year in high school.

"This year, Jonathan has worked even harder, and he came into camp in great shape," coach Vic Eumont said. "We expect a lot of him, to be our leader because he can do a lot of things."

Eumont said Martin is calm and polite -- until it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. "He's one of those 'yes, sir,' and 'no, sir' kind of kids, but when he straps on a helmet you can see the difference," Eumont said. "He's a nice guy in the real world, but he's a lot tougher on the field."

of two-a-day practices, Martin has slimmed down and can feel the difference.

"I've actually lost about 10 pounds to get down to 270," he said. "That gives me more quickness and more explosion off the line."

It's rare to find a young athlete so big and strong, yet so fluid and athletic.

Martin plays on the varsity basketball team, and he's a slam-dunker. He even dares high-flying basketball teammate Renaldo Woolridge, son of former NBA NBA
