HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMEDAY.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

DIV. II

VALENCIA (7-3)

at CLAREMONT (6-4) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Jeff Mazzeo, OL, Valencia

He's done a great job all season protecting sophomore QB Mike Herrick, who has set a school single-season passing-yardage record.

Key stat: 10

Number of INTs by Valencia's Geoff Tisdale. He needs one more to set a Foothill League single-season record. Matt Moore, now a UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
quarterback, had 10 INTs for Hart in 2000.

Why Valencia will win: Claremont hasn't seen such a sophisticated passing team, and Valencia's offense was red hot against Hart of Newhall last week, when Herrick passed for 374 yards and four TDs. The only reason Valencia doesn't have a home seed against a third-place opponent is because Valencia happens to be in the same league as high-powered Hart and Canyon, both of which beat Valencia by one TD in shootouts. Valencia figures to be a substantial favorite regardless of the seedings.

Why Claremont will win: Jamaal Floyd is one of California's most explosive RBs. He gained an Inland Valley-record 427 yards and scored five TDs in a victory over Los Osos two weeks ago, and the 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior enters tonight's game with 1,406 yards, nine receptions and 19 TDs in eight games. Floyd, who has been offered scholarships by UCLA, Colorado and others, has been bothered by a shoulder injury but should be full strength, according to according to

Last week: Hart beat Valencia 42-35; Claremont beat Alta Loma 28-3.

Perspective: Defending section semifinalist Claremont has scored more than four TDs in a game just twice, while Valencia has done so five times. The styles are much different: Valencia has passed for nearly four times more yardage yard·age 1

BURBANK (6-4)

at CHINO (7-3) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Jesse Ayers, WR, Burbank

Ayers does a little of everything for Burbank. He leads the team with 44 receptions for 858 yards, rushed for 69 yards and three TDs, and he's scored 17 TDs - including a 92-yard kick return.

Key stat: .833

Burbank's road record this season (5-1).

Why Burbank will win: The team is riding high after beating neighborhood rival Burroughs of Burbank last week, a major celebration for a team that has qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1991. QB Mike McDonald Mike McDonald (born June 22, 1958 in North Hollywood, California) is a former professional American football player who played long snapper for nine seasons in the NFL.  could shock Chino, which hasn't seen many quality passers. McDonald, who has thrown for 1,580 yards and 18 TDs, needs to a big performance for Burbank to pull off an upset.

Why Chino will win: Chino prides itself on defense and simple, smash-mouth football. The team has given up an average of 14.2 points and has held its past five opponents to two TDs or fewer. RB Shawn Oatis has rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 14 TDs. Darrell Chamarro is an excellent PK who has converted seven FGs and 22 of 24 PATs.

Last week: Burbank beat Burroughs 24-17; Chino beat Diamond Bar 19-18.

Perspective: Prior to this season, Burbank had lost 50 league games in a row, and had won a total of eight games since 1996. Annual power Chino is 29-6 over the past three years. The last local opponent Chino faced was Quartz Hill, which lost 37-0 in Week 3 of 2001.

MISSION VIEJO Mission Vi·e·jo

A community of southern California southeast of Irvine. It is mainly residential. Population: 96,300.
 (10-0)

vs. BURROUGHS (4-6) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Matt Patterson, DB, Burroughs

Patterson has 132 tackles, among the most in the state. He had 14 (along with his second INT of the season) in a loss to Burbank last week.

Key stat: 1.000

Mission Viejo QB Mark Sanchez's passing percentage against Capistrano Valley last week. He was 12 for 12 for 326 yards and four TDs.

Why Mission Viejo will win: Ranked No. 5 in the nation by USA Today USA Today

, the top seed has won 38 games in a row, including a 10-6 victory over Hart of Newhall in last year's Div. II final at Edison Field. WR/DB Marty Tadman Marty Tadman is a starting safety on Boise State's 2006-2007 Fiesta Bowl winning team, at which he earned the Defensive player of the Game award. He is covered with many Christian tattoos and is considered one of the better players on the team. , a starting QB last year, has 35 receptions and five TDs. Transfer QB Sanchez has made an impact, completing 74.4 percent of his passes for 1,615 yards and 20 TDs with just two INTs.

Why Burroughs will win: Thomas Kyle has proved to be a dangerous RB since taking over the starting position in Week 3. The 5-foot-7, 165-pound sophomore has rushed for 949 yards - including more than 200 against Hart - with seven TDs.

Last week: Mission Viejo beat Capistrano Valley 42-0; Burroughs of Burbank lost to Burbank 24-17.

Perspective: Mission Viejo has had a couple of one-point victories (14-13 over Fountain Valley Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. Chiefly residential, Fountain Valley also has diverse manufactures, including apparel, computer equipment, semiconductors, and medical equipment. A U.S. navy helicopter facility is there.  in Week 1 and 28-27 over Long Beach Poly in Week 4), but the team has won its past five games by an average of 50 points. Burroughs has lost four in a row and has yet to beat an opponent with a better-than-.500 record.

HART (7-3) vs. UPLAND (5-5)

at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Scott Amorelli, DB, Hart

If Hart jumps to an early lead, which is a possibility, Upland will be forced to pass, and that's where Amorelli comes in. He has started every game in a changing secondary.

Key stat: .950

Hart's winning percentage in the playoffs since 1997. The team won four consecutive Div. III titles and 19 consecutive postseason games before falling to Mission Viejo in last year's Div. II championship.

Why Hart will win: After starting the season with three consecutive losses against opponents currently ranked among the top seven in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, Hart of Newhall is on a roll. The team has won seven in a row, including last week's 42-35 comeback victory over Valencia to clinch the Foothill League title. Sean Norton has passed for 2,626 yards and 29 TDs. Kevin Ciccone (53 receptions, 938 yards, 12 TDs) is among the state's top WRs, and Dan Howell has rushed for 875 yards, caught 19 passes and scored 18 TDs.

Why Upland will win: Brian Haith, a junior, is an explosive WR who has 35 receptions for 809 yards - an average of 23.1 yards per catch - with 10 TDs, including a 99-yarder.

Last week: Hart beat Valencia 42-35; Upland lost to Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif.  17-14.

CAPISTRANO VALLEY (4-6)

at CANYON (9-1) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Daniel Van Deventer, OL, Canyon

Van Deventer, among the league's top blockers, looks to protect QB Nate Longshore Nate Longshore (born June 30, 1986 in Canyon Country, California, U.S.) is an American football quarterback for the California Golden Bears. Longshore was an Elite-11 quarterback in high school and a 4-star recruit rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com."How Far ...  and open holes for RB Louis Montano.

has broken Canyon's single-game passing record over the past seven weeks. He threw for 392 yards and four TDs against Saugus on Friday.

Why Capistrano Valley will win: With such a light offense and modest record, Capistrano Valley might get overlooked. But the team has a solid defensive line, led by Dan Jones (six sacks) and Andrew Kavlich (five sacks). Sophomore RB Kory Kemmerer (611 yards).

Why Canyon will win: Canyon is a much more explosive team, averaging 44.5 points compared to Capistrano Valley's 12.2. Longshore has passed for 2,680 yards and 27 TDs.

Last week: Capistrano Valley lost to Mission Viejo 42-0; Canyon beat Saugus 42-7.

Perspective: Canyon averages significantly more points in the first half (19.2) than Capistrano Valley averages a game (12.2). Over the past two years, Canyon is 18-2 in the regular season, losing only to national power Hart twice. Capistrano Valley is 5-15 during the same period, and the team hasn't beaten a .500 opponent in more than three seasons.

Div. III

ST. FRANCIS (7-3)

at NO. 5 PALMDALE (9-1) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Elliot Jones, FS, St. Francis

St. Francis coach Jim Bonds says Jones is the quarterback of his defense and makes all the reads. Jones is a three-year starter and All-Southern Section Div. III selection last season. With Palmdale's speed, St. Francis will have to be in the right defense, and Jones is responsible for that.

Key stat: 1

Number of teams St. Francis has beaten this season who finished with a winning record. The Golden Knights
  • For the Byzantine order of Knights, see Angelici.
  • For the ancient sect, see Angelici (sect).
  • For the US Army Parachute Team The Golden Knights, see United States Army Parachute Team
  • For the annual correspondence chess tournament, see Golden Knights (chess)
beat Arcadia (6-4) 31-6 in the season opener.

Why St. Francis will win: The Golden Knights of La Canada can pass the ball - QB Matt Abbey has 1,311 yards and 12 TDs - and Palmdale hasn't had to defend against the pass much this season. Also, St. Francis has 29 sacks, led by DB James Eland eland (ē`lənd), large, spiral-horned African antelope, genus Taurotragus, found in brush country or open forest at the edge of grasslands. Elands live in small herds and are primarily browsers rather than grazers.  (94 tackles, four sacks, five INTs) and LB Matt Redoglia (five sacks) and should be able to put pressure on Palmdale sophomore QB Rodney Trimm.

Why Palmdale will win: Palmdale has outscored its past two opponents 90-0. The Falcons defense allowed only four points a game in Golden League play, and WR/RB JaVonte Holmes has scored nine TDs in his past four games.

Last week: Palmdale beat Quartz Hill 52-0; St. Francis lost to St. Paul St. Paul

Perspective: Palmdale was hoping to draw a team from one of the weaker leagues in Div. III like last season, when the Eagles beat Pasadena of the Pacific League 47-0. St. Francis is a perennial Div. III power and hasn't been an at-large team since 1995.

Outlook: St. Francis is a tough, disciplined team, but Palmdale has superior speed and an underrated defense. If St. Francis can cut back on Palmdale's yards after the catch, it's got a shot. But if Holmes and WRs Justin Shaw and T.J. McKay break the first tackle, it could be a long night.

Combined record of the five teams Beverly Hills has beaten this season.

Why Antelope Valley will win: Antelope Valley of Lancaster had to win two games in a row to make the playoffs, meaning they've been in a playoff mentality for two weeks. Why Beverly Hills will win: The Antelopes haven't seen a more balanced team this season and will have trouble defending 6-foot-3 WR Brandon Rice (67 catches, 987 yards, 15 TDs) and 6-4 WR Otto Stallworth (24 catches, 385 yards). RB Kyle McCall (877 yards, 18 TDs) keeps defenses honest.

in the Golden League, Antelope Valley seems to have drawn the weakest first-round opponent of the league's three representatives. Beverly Hills was the second-place team in a weak Bay League this year and has beaten only one team with a winning record.

Outlook: Beverly Hills' tall WRs could create some matchup problems for A.V.'s 5-6 DBs Jovan Johnson and Eric Wickliffe, but Peters and FS Aaron Crenshaw will provide help. The Antelopes have played inspired the past two weeks and look for that to continue tonight. A.V. should win and move on to play second-seeded St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs, which has lost top RB Dwight Tardy tar·dy

CHAMINADE (7-3)

at ARCADIA (6-4) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Chris Turner
For the American baseball player use Chris Turner (baseball player)

Chris Turner (born September 15, 1958 in Sheffield, where he attended Myers Grove School) is an English football manager.
, QB, Chaminade

Chaminade of West Hills will go as far in the playoffs as the junior's arm can take them.

Key stat: 1-4

Arcadia's nonleague record before running the table in a weak Pacific League.

Why Chaminade will win: Marcus Everett (1,113 yards, 14 TDs) and Adrian Aye-Darko (927 yards, 6 TDs) form one of best receiving combos in the area. Turner can pick the single-covered WR and is extremely accurate (60 percent) on short and long throws as long as he has time. An improved defense is coming off its first shutout of the season.

Why Arcadia will win: QB Drew Wheat, a 6-foot-4 senior, threw for 1,428 yards, 744 of them to WR Jordan Gardner. Gardner is coming off a career-best 171-yard game. The size of Chaminade's team, just more than 20 players, is shocking to opponents. Because of a lack of depth, the Eagles tend to wear down near the end of games.

Last week: Chaminade beat Alemany of Mission Hills 32-0; Arcadia beat Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  of La Crescenta 42-21

Perspective: Arcadia lost 31-6 to St. Francis of La Canada, a team Chaminade beat 38-17 in its signature win of the season.

Outlook: The key for Chaminade is giving Turner time to throw. He has been sacked and pressured too much in each of the Eagles' defeats. If Chaminade has time to throw, it will make up for the low roster numbers.

Croal has 87 tackles, nine sacks and one interception this year. He'll be key to stopping Lancaster's wing-T offense, which has produced one of the area's most potent running games (2,468 yards).

Key stat: 3

Number of times Lancaster has been eliminated from the playoffs by a Mission League team. That's also the number of playoff appearances Lancaster has in its seven-year history.

Why Lancaster will win: Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks RB Cary Harris (13 TDs, 793 yards) is nursing a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn.  and didn't play last week. • Will Morgan (Minnesota politician), a State Representative from Minnesota
  • Will Morgan (Soviet Spy), a Soviet Spy
combined to score five touchdowns last week, and Domenic Cornelius had 215 yards rushing.

Why Notre Dame will win: Even with injuries to Harris, LB Julian Gestewitz and DL Verlondon Harris, Notre Dame should have talent to spare. Coach Kevin Rooney Kevin Rooney born on May 4, 1956 in Catskill, NY and is a boxing trainer and former boxer. Amateur Boxing Career

Last week: Lancaster beat Highland of Palmdale 41-20; Notre Dame beat Harvard-Westlake of Studio City 45-7.

Perspective: Notre Dame is the defending Div. III champion; Lancaster has won only one playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Outlook: This has been a dream season for Lancaster, but though Notre Dame has some key injuries, the Knights are just too strong and talented. Look for the Eagles to score some points and make it interesting, but Notre Dame should prevail.

at WESTLAKE (10-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Greg Newman, LB, Westlake

Showed a nonstop motor last week against Moorpark, even beating the DBs to chase down Moorpark RB Anthony Lopez on a long run last week.

Key stat: 10-0

This is the first Westlake team to finish the regular season undefeated.

Why San Marcos will win: This is not the typical sacrificial patsy for the top seed. Before dropping its final two games to Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  and St. Bonaventure of Ventura, San Marcos of Santa Barbara was one of the higher-ranked teams in the division. Justin Gillett leads the team in passing (770 yards) and rushing (582 yards, 10 TDs).

Why Westlake will win: The Warriors earned their perfect record, beating top area teams Hart of Newhall, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and Agoura. The offensive line, led by Ryan Sorenson and Steve Gatena, is huge. The defensive line, led by Jimmy Miller and Michael Stuart Michael Stuart (born January 9, 1975 in New York City) is a salsa singer and actor of Puerto Rican descent. Early years

Last week: San Marcos lost to St. Bonaventure 45-21; Westlake beat Moorpark 49-21

Perspective: San Marcos got the division's only at-large bid An at-large bid is a bid or berth in a sporting tournament granted by invitation, not right. This term is most commonly used in the United States to refer to berths that the NCAA grants in its annual Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments, although at-large berths are , edging out the Marmonte League's Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. . Westlake and San Marcos met in the playoffs in 1998, with Westlake losing 41-39.

Outlook: With Westlake's size, the speed of RB Tahj Mowry Tahj Dayton Mowry (born May 17, 1986) is an American actor. Family

Shutouts by Agoura this season, three of them in the past four games.

Why Dos Pueblos will win: A big offensive line and a wide-open passing game make Dos Pueblos of Goleta a difficult matchup. QB Kellen Moriarty passed for 2,265 yards in the regular season, including a career-high 390 last week. He's also the team's leading rusher with 484 yards and seven touchdowns. .

Why Agoura will win: The Chargers seem to be a new team since losing to Westlake in Week 5. In the five games since then, Agoura found a running game, improved its defense and outscored opponents 192-35. QB Bryan Walker has a nice connection going with WR Braden Lepisto. LB Clay Matthews William Clay Matthews, Jr. (born March 15, 1956 in Palo Alto, California) is a former American football linebacker who played for the Cleveland Browns and the Atlanta Falcons. He played 19 seasons and 278 games in the NFL (third most in NFL history).  Jr. leads a defense that allowed 10.7 points a game.

Last week: Dos Pueblos tied Buena 27-27; Agoura beat Calabasas 49-21

Perspective: Dos Pueblos tied Buena, the team Agoura beat 26-21 in the season opener. The Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  is 3-2 against the Channel League this season.

Outlook: There weren't as many passing teams in the Marmonte League this season as usual. Agoura proved it could shut down the run against Moorpark and now can tune up against the pass, which will be needed if it wants another shot at Westlake.

MOORPARK (7-3)

at ARROYO GRANDE (9-1-1) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Anthony Lopez, RB, Moorpark

Moorpark needs to run the ball to win. Lopez struggled against Agoura but bounced back to go for more than 100 yards against Westlake.

Key stat: 5

Number of Arroyo Grande victories that have come by fewer than 10 points.

Why Moorpark will win: The Musketeers are coming off two frustrating losses against two excellent teams. Moorpark will be hungry for a win, and it is a tough draw for third-seeded Arroyo Grande. Arroyo Grande sets up the pass with a deceptive running game. Moorpark needs to stuff the run with DE Jason Breckley and LB Chris Dillon and get great play from the offensive line.

Why Arroyo Grande will win: Sophomore QB Kyle Pollock is a master at disguising his handoffs. It's difficult to tell who has the ball. Maybe it's the running back, maybe the receiver cutting around top or maybe Pollock has kept it, either to run with his 6-foot-5 frame or catch the opponent by surprise with a pass. Arroyo Grande is huge on the defensive line, the main reason it has allowed just 10.6 points a game.

Last week: Moorpark lost to Westlake 49-14; Arroyo Grande beat San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  23-21

Perspective: The one local team Arroyo Grande played was its lone loss, to Valencia. Valencia used quick, short passes to keep neutralize Arroyo Grande's advantage on the line. Moorpark QB Cody Holland has completed 60.4 percent of his passes.

Outlook: This is a potential upset in the making. Moorpark will have its hands full with Arroyo Grande's run game early. But the Musketeers have what it takes to figure out Arroyo Grande's run scheme and pull out a close one.
