HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMEDAY THIS WEEK'S KEY GAMES.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

HART at MOORPARK 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Ryan Wolfe Ryan Wolfe is a fictional character in the show , portrayed by American actor Jonathan Togo. Characterization
As portrayed by Togo, Ryan Wolfe is a man driven to succeed. He displays a desire a to impress his superiors coupled with ambition (c.f.
, WR/DB, Hart

Wolfe, a senior who hopes to enjoy his first injury-free season, scored last week on two long passes within the first five plays during a scrimmage against South Bakersfield.

Key stat: 19

Consecutive seasons in which Hart has produced an All-Southern Section QB.

Why Hart will win: Rarely does Hart lose at all, especially to an opponent not ranked among California's top 10.

Why Moorpark will win: The team is known for its defense and perhaps Hart's new skill-position starters will have jitters jitters 'Butterflies' Psychology An episode of nervousness or anxiety that often precedes a public event; jitters is a type of performance anxiety which may affect actors in a stage production–stage fright or soloist musicians; it may respond to anxiolytics .

Outlook: Defending Div. III semifinalist Moorpark is usually among the area's strongest defensive teams. So this matchup should be a revealing test for defending Div. II champion Hart, which is working in a new QB, Tyler Lyon, and a new RB, Robbie Casselberry. Hart returns several key OLs, including Dusty Green and Zac Zimmerman, two of the area's biggest, strongest blockers. Defensively, the team has an experienced DL in Steve Burton Steve Burton may refer to:

  • Steve Burton (footballer born 1982)
  • Steve Burton (footballer born 1983)
  • Steve Burton, television sports reporter for WBZ-TV and WSBK-TV in Boston.
, along with returning LBs Bubba bub·ba

2. A white working-class man of the southern United States, stereotypically regarded as uneducated and gregarious with his peers.

BIRMINGHAM at NOTRE DAME Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Josh Cordray, DL, Notre Dame

He isn't the biggest lineman around - 6-1 1/2, 225 pounds - but he has excellent technique and his motor never stops. Recorded 14 sacks last year.

Key stat: 52.6

Completion percentage for Birmingham QB Andrew Miramontes last season. Now a year older, the Patriots hope that rate climbs.

Why Notre Dame will win: Kevin Rooney's teams are always well-prepared and poised, key factors in a big-time season opener in which mistakes - or the lack of - is critical. Notre Dame is stacked in the skill positions with returning RB Cary Harris and QB Garrett Green. Top pass rusher Josh Cordray leads an impressive defense.

Why Birmingham will win: It's hard to imagine another team in the area with as much speed and quickness as the Patriots. WRs Cory Anderson and Kenny Davis can flat out fly, and QB Andrew Miramontes has another year's experience. Birmingham has the ability to score on any play. The speed factor will more than compensate for any mistakes and first-game jitters.

Outlook: This is easily the most intriguing matchup of the week, a showdown between two Southern Section and City Section powers. They're both well-coached, high-talent clubs who can put on a show with their skill players.

SAUGUS vs. BLAIR of Pasadena 7:30 p.m. at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.

Player to watch: Alex Dekok, OL, Saugus

Among the Foothill League's strongest and most experienced blockers, Dekok looks to protect the QB and open holes for a quartet of RBs vying for playing time.

Key stat: 1.000

Saugus coach Jason Bornn's winning percentage in season openers (1 for 1).

Why Saugus will win: Because Blair almost never does.

Why Blair will win: The only way this happens is if Saugus is totally unprepared.

Outlook: Div. X lightweight Blair figures to be a soft opening opponent having a 1-28-1 record the last three seasons, including a 1-9 mark last year. If Saugus, which returns three-year starting QB Travis Babin, doesn't win this game decisively, there's going to be some finger pointing.

Second-year coach Jason Bornn believes he's got a good defense this year, led by LB Mike Newcomb and DL Kody Kurowski. The team looked sharp during a scrimmage against Lancaster, so perhaps this is the year Saugus turns things around after consecutive two-win seasons.

THIS WEEK'S OTHER GAMES

No. 5 PALMDALE (0-0) at CRESPI (0-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Sam Chamberlain, DE/G, Crespi

Senior lineman hasn't gotten much recognition because of his size (6-2, 230), but he has worked hard in the weight room to improve his strength and speed and will play a key role tonight as the Celts The following pages provide lists of nations or people of Celtic origin, arranged by branch of Celtic ethnicity or language grouping:

to render neutral.
 Palmdale's team speed.

Key stat: 11-1

Record of Palmdale quarterback Rodney Trimm as a sophomore starter last season.

Why Palmdale will win: The Falcons were hit hard by graduation at skill positions but don't let that fool you. WR Kwincy Edwards and RB Dominic Blood had to wait their turn last season, but are ready for breakout years. Palmdale returns most of its offensive line, led by seniors Willie Lenarez and 6-7, 320-pound David Contreras.

Why Crespi will win: The Celts decided to beef up their nonleague schedule this season to better prepare for Del Rey Del Rey may refer to:
  • Del Rey, California, a census-designated place in Fresno County, California
  • Del Rey, Los Angeles, California, a small district in the west side of Los Angeles
  • Del Rey (band), an indie rock band
League play and the playoffs. In 2003, Crespi won its first league title since 1991 but didn't go in the playoffs. A win against Palmdale would go a long way toward re-establishing Crespi as an area power.

Outlook: Both teams excelled on defense last season and went undefeated in league play. Palmdale, the Southern Section Div. III runner-up, should be favored, but look for an exciting, close game.

OAKS CHRISTIAN (0-0) at MUIR (0-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch:Jimmy Clausen James Richard "Jimmy" Clausen (born September 21, 1987, in Thousand Oaks, California[3]) is an American football player. He is a quarterback at the University of Notre Dame. , QB, Oaks Christian

After a freshman year in which he got plenty of playing time, the brother of former Tennessee QB Casey Clausen Casey Clausen (born January 9, 1981) is a former American football player who played college football for the University of Tennessee. He took over the starting position from A.J. Suggs.  (Alemany of Mission Hills) and current Tennessee QB Rick Clausen Richard James Clausen (born June 29, 1982) is a former American football player who played college football for Louisiana State University. He transfered to the University of Tennessee, where he walked on to the football team as a backup quarterback.  (Taft of Woodland Hills) makes his first start.

Key stat: 35-5

Varsity record for Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, which has played at that level for three years plus one game in 2000.

Why Oaks Christian will win: The skill-position talent, with Clausen, RB Aaron Ware, WR Marc Tyler Marc Tyler (born September 27, 1988 in Palmdale, California) is an American football running back for the University of Southern California Trojans football team. High school career
Tyler attended Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California.
 - among others - would make most large schools jealous.

Why Muir will win: Projected to finish second in the Pacific League, the Southern Section Div. III team is perhaps the best team Oaks Christian has ever faced.

Outlook: This is the type of game Oaks Christian should be playing in its quest to become one of the top football programs in the area, and not just among small schools. But the Lions could find Muir of Pasadena's athletes and size too much to handle.

ARCADIA (0-0) at ST. FRANCIS (0-0) 7:30 p.m.

Player to watch: Blake Milton, RB, St. Francis

Milton got off to a great start last season but minor injuries slowed him down. St. Francis is a much better team with the bruising runner at 100 percent.

Key stat: 6

Pacific League titles in the past 10 years for Arcadia.

Why Arcadia will win: The two-time defending Pacific League champions are breaking in a new quarterback and receivers but should be able to rely early on returning RB Audarrius Bailey (1,717 yards, 20 TDs), one of the top runners in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

Why St. Francis will win: With a reputation of a strong defense and running attack, coach Jim Bonds expects his team to be more of a passing threat this year with senior QB Matt Abbey and WR Mason Elieff. To back it up, the Golden Knights
  • For the Byzantine order of Knights, see Angelici.
  • For the ancient sect, see Angelici (sect).
  • For the US Army Parachute Team The Golden Knights, see United States Army Parachute Team

won the summer Oaks Christian passing tournament.

Outlook: Arcadia is easily the best team in the Pacific League, while St. Francis is projected as third best in the Mission League. St. Francis will again prove the Mission League's dominance in Southern Section Div. III.

CRESCENTA VALLEY The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  (0-0) at THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  (0-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Phillip Salazar, QB, Crescenta Valley

One of the area's most dynamic players, Salazar begins his quest to pass for more than 2,000 yards and eclipse 1,000 yards rushing.

Key stat: 27

Fumbles by Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta last season, a number that must be cut in half.

Why Crescenta Valley will win: Though it's no longer with the wide-open spread attack, the Eagles are one of the toughest offenses to stop. Players like RB Chris Stroh will need to be a bigger part of an offense that relied too heavily on Salazar (81.8 percent of team's yards).

Why Thousand Oaks will win: On paper, Thousand Oaks returns the best skill players in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule. . RB Jack Boger (1,319 yards) and WR Matt Luft (694 yards as soph) are two of the best players in the area at their positions.

Outlook: Both teams, among the area's best as recently as three years ago, show promise coming off a disappointing season. The teams tended to shoot themselves in the foot. The one to make the least mistakes will win.

GRANADA HILLS at GRANT 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Ray Felger, TE, Granada Hills

Felger, one of the top TE's in the region, is a big (6-3, 215) target with tremendous hands.

Key stat: 2,395

Amount of passing yards lost by Granada Hills after the graduation of QB Brandon Charls. Alex Ritthamel is replacing Charls.

Why Granada Hills will win: Talent-wise, the Highlanders have a little more depth and experience than Grant, and that will be the difference in the season opener.

Why Grant will win: Grant is always a gritty, hard-nosed team. With the added incentive of playing under first-year coach Miguel Gonzalez Miguel Gonzalez (born September 25, 1987 in Miami, Florida) is an American soccer player who plays midfielder for the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer.

Gonzalez spent two years in the Santos Laguna youth system, before joining the Bradenton Academy in 2006.
(a former Grant player) there will be enough incentive to kick-start a new era with a big victory.

Outlook: Felger will own the middle of the field with his size and hands, and with the big TE moving the chains and putting the Highlanders in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on , the edge goes to Granada Hills.

TAFT at CRENSHAW cren·shaw   also cran·shaw
n.
A variety of winter melon (Cucumis melo var. inodorus) having a greenish-yellow rind and sweet, usually salmon-pink flesh.

[Origin unknown.]
 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Josh Portis, QB, Taft

Portis will benefit from the return of Taft coach Troy Starr, who will restore discipline and fine-tune the Toreadors passing game.

Key stat: 5

Number of INTs for Taft DB Jason Haywood last season. Haywood, one of the top DBs in the area, might double that number this year.

Why Taft will win: With Starr back on the sideline, Taft will be greatly improved in the areas of discipline and poise. That, plus the development of Portis, puts the Toreadors on track for the City Championship game.

Why Crenshaw will win: The Cougars have one of the top offensive tackles in the nation in massive 6-5, 315-pounder Aleksey Lanis, and they'll run behind him all night to victory.

Outlook: Consider Taft back after a one-year vanishing act "Vanishing Act" is an episode of The Outer Limits television series. It first aired on 21 July, 1996, during the second season. Introduction
Trevor McPhee makes a quick trip to the shops, but after a strange experience he returns home to find that ten years have
. Everything is in place for a brilliant season, and it starts tonight.

LEUZINGER of Lawndale at CANYON 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Dejon Negron, WR, Canyon

Negron, a senior, has never played a full season because of eligibility problems. But he looked terrific during the summer and could develop into Canyon's key offensive player if he sticks around.

Key stat:5

Number of Canyon graduates from last year's team who are playing Div. I college football this season.

Why Leuzinger will win: The team's unconventional offense is something Canyon usually doesn't see. Such unfamiliarity could be an X-factor.

Why Canyon will win: Canyon hasn't lost a nonleague game since 2001. That sounds like pretty good odds.

Outlook: Canyon graduated most of its skill-position players who helped the team win 22 games over the last two seasons. But Canyon's JV and frosh programs have been strong over the same time period, and if promising QB Will Brogan develops as expected, the Cowboys should be in good shape.

at College of the Canyons

Player to watch: Travis Quale qua·le
n. pl. qua·li·a
A property, such as whiteness, considered independently from things having the property.

[From Latin qu
, OL, Valencia

After illnesses forced Quale to miss nearly all of last season, the senior has come back in better shape and with renewed enthusiasm. He must provide protection for Valencia, which averages more than 30 passes per game.

Key stat: 400

Number of yards Valencia's Michael Herrick totaled against Amat in last year's opener.

Why Valencia will win: This one is simple: The team is more talented and experienced.

Why Bishop Amat will win: The fact the team already has played a game serves as a big advantage.

Outlook: Valencia's Herrick figures to pass on nearly every down. He's got plenty of experienced targets in Shane Morales (62 receptions, eight TDs) and Chris Wright Chris Wright may refer to:
  • Chris Wright (cricketer), of Middlesex County Cricket Club
  • Chris Wright (footballer), of Boston United F.C.
  • C.W. Anderson, wrestler
  • Chris Wright, founder and chairman of Chrysalis Group, a UK media company.
(52 receptions, four TDs). Bishop Amat has a game under its belt - a 39-33 loss to Vista of San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  - but Vista was a running team, so Bishop Amat must adjust its defensive game plan.

CHAMINADE (0-0) at ROYAL (0-0) 7 p.m.

Player to watch: Kevin Harrington Kevin Harrington (born 4 September 1959 in Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian actor who is perhaps best known for his role as David Bishop on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. , QB, Royal

6-foot-6 sophomore makes his debut.

Key stat: 2,595

Combined receiving yards Chaminade of West Hills got from the graduated duo of Marcus Everett and Adrian Aye-Darko.

Why Chaminade will win: Chris Turner
For the American baseball player use Chris Turner (baseball player)

Chris Turner (born September 15, 1958 in Sheffield, where he attended Myers Grove School) is an English football manager.
(3,361 yards, 30 TDs) is one of the top quarterbacks in the area. He has a big target in TE Logan Paulsen, who will also anchor the defensive line.

Why Royal will win: Harrington also has a top tight end in Lance Bordeleau. Returning RBs Matt Morris and Alex Mosier will take the pressure off Harrington in his first game.

Outlook: Harrington appears to have the makings of a great quarterback. But Turner is an experienced senior, already established as an accomplished varsity passer. Give Chaminade the edge.
