HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL EXTRA : GROWING UP FAST.Byline: GERRY GITTELSON, Staff Writer Three of Sylmar High's prominent starters, quarterback John Valdez and receiver/defensive backs Damon Derrico and Phil Samano, have never played football before this season. Coach Jeff Engilman, whose Spartans are 1-2 after losses to respected Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. Valdez is a raw talent. He's 24 of 47 (51 percent) for 183 yards and one TD with two interceptions. ``It's been kind of hard for us because the first three games have been against the toughest teams we'll face all season,'' Valdez said. ``I think all three of us have grown up together.'' Samano is the second-leading receiver with six catches for 33 yards, and Derrico - recruited from the basketball team - has three receptions. ``I think Damon is going to break out real soon. He's a real good athlete,'' Valdez said. Man of massive yardage yard·age 1 n. 1. An amount or length measured in yards. 2. Cloth sold by the yard. Noun 1. Jermaine Marshall of Kilpatrick attempts to surpass 300 yards rushing for the third straight week on Friday against Montclair Prep at Valley College. No regional running back has ever accomplished the feat, and only two, Emmanuel Evans (Birmingham, 1997) and Wilbert Smith (Montclair Prep, 1993) have ever ran for more than 300 yards two weeks in a row. Marshall had 338 yards and seven TDs in a 50-35 victory at Ontario Christian on Friday and 362 yards and four TDs the week before against Cerritos Valley Christian. He has 660 yards (10.5 avg.) and 16 touchdowns in three games. If Marshall keeps the pace and the Mustangs (3-0), ranked fourth in Div. XII, eventually advance to the section final, he will finish with 3,080 yards and 75 touchdowns. ``Jermaine's been playing great and he's not even in full step yet,'' coach Sid Ware said. ``He does it so effortlessly. In fact, he would have already had three straight 300-yard games, but he had a long touchdown called back in the first game against Silver Valley and finished with 260.'' Caught in Krause fire Kevin Krause had 45 receptions for Royal last year, but his production has plummeted after switching from receiver to tight end this season. In fact, he has zero receptions, and Royal is 1-2 after losing 21-0 to Ventura. Krause is 6-4, 218 pounds, and the coaches decided they need him in the box, opting for speed on the outside with starters Tyler Williams and Davon Wilson. The Highlanders were held to 157 yards, 68 passing, against Ventura. Krause, considered one the region's top defensive backs, also has switched positions on defense. He's now playing linebacker. However, he's not complaining. ``I want to play where the coaches need me,'' he said. ``I just need to concentrate on playing football.'' PLAY OF THE WEEK Manuel White Manuel White (born July 2, 1982) is an American football running back. has been known to carry the ball 37 times in one game for Valencia, but the Vikings don't have 37 different plays. So perhaps they'll run this one over and over again Friday at Chatsworth. Man bites man Patrick Norton For the North Dakota politician, see . Patrick couldn't believe it,'' said his mother, Carol Norton. ``I thought it was so unusual that I took a picture of it. It's definitely the first time it's ever happened.'' Buddies again Immediately after Notre Dame plays Alemany on Friday, Alemany quarterback Casey Clausen Casey Clausen (born January 9, 1981) is a former American football player who played college football for the University of Tennessee. He took over the starting position from A.J. There, Clausen, who has orally committed to Tenneesse, will try to pursuade the undecided Johnson to join him with the Vols. It is hoped that Johnson won't break Clausen's leg or something like that during the game. Seeing Miles Cory Miles, a promising second-string quarterback behind All-American prospect Zac Wasserman at Westlake, played the second series against El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:
Miles, two years ago considered the region's best frosh-soph quarterback, attempted just one varsity pass last season. ``He did pretty good under pressure,'' said receiver Michael Brignac, the beneficiary of Miles' touchdown pass. ``They brought him in because he's been working so hard in practice.'' Wasserman, who completed 11 of 17 for 141 yards, including two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Westlake won 31-10, said bringing in Miles was good for the team's morale. ``The coaches thought Cory deserved to play and this gave him some game experience,'' Wasserman said. ``Obviously he's going to be the quarterback next year, so it's good that he went in.'' Wall power John Wall kicked two field goals - including a 51-yarder, his fourth career field goal of 50 yards or more - in Birmingham's 21-18 loss to Reseda. However, Wall, who converted a state-high 15 field goals last year, had a field goal and two extra points blocked. He's 3 of 8 on the season and needs 12 field goals to break Notre Dame's Chris Sailer's career record of 33. Highlanders on a high Granada Hills, last year's biggest success story after going 12-1, started slowly with a narrow victory over heavy underdog North Hollywood, followed by a 23-21 loss to Royal. However, the Highlanders looked like their old selves in Friday's 52-24 victory over South Gate, and quarterback Jason Winn thinks they've found their groove. ``We've got that taste of winning back and we're definitely more confident,'' said Winn, who was 12 of 15 for 257 yards and two touchdowns on Friday. ``The first two games we had new receivers, and we were just trying to get things together. After we lost to Royal we had to run so many 100-yard gassers (sprints) after practice that I lost track and stopped counting.'' Joey Rodriguez is an emerging star. He had four receptions for 150 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown, in the South Gate win. Rodriguez, who Winn said is faster than any receiver Granada Hills has had over the last two years, has 14 catches for 349 yards (24.9 average) and two TDs. THE ENGIL We award Engils each week to the players we feel live up to the legendary standards of Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman, our favorite tough guy. JASON WAGNER Reseda RB/DB Forget all this stuff about touchdowns and yardage, Wagner blocked two kicks and had two sacks to spark a 21-18 victory over Birmingham. Now that's a football player. He's far and away the City Section's leading receiver with with 23 catches - no one else has more than 16. However, Trent is just 5-foot-7, so Engil said there's no way he can warrant more than three Engils. Coach Bill Paden vows Bethea will never be caught from behind. ``James finally got a chance to stretch out,'' Paden said. ``The only kid who maybe could catch him would be Fred Williams Frederick Ronald (Fred) Williams is an is an Australian painter and printmaker. Robert Lopino's game-winning 40-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining on Friday was a milestone for Montclair Prep. Coach George Giannini, who's been there since 1970, said the Mounties had never won a game on a late field goal. ``There was no time to be nervous,'' Giannini said. . . . Mission It will be interesting to see how many points Alemany - the region's top scoring team - manages against Notre Dame, the area's best defensive team. At first glance, Alemany has the edge. Casey Clausen has been dynamic, passing for 913 yards and 14 touchdowns, including eight last week against Torrance. He has a full complement of game-breakers, led by De'Andre Scott (430 yards rushing) and Derek Goodman (330 yards receiving). But don't underestimate Notre Dame, which faced a similar challenge against Loyola last year and shut down the Cubs in a stirring 17-13 victory. Alemany must find a way to coral Travis Johnson but must also be aware of DE Alec Moss and Notre Dame's heady LBs. Foothill Valencia's Manuel White, the region's No. 1 running back, didn't make SuperPrep's All-West Super-30 team. However, White said being snubbed just makes him work harder. ``I don't really pay attention to those, but at first I did,'' White said. ``I missed a couple of games last year. I got mad (about my ratings) at first, but now it's just motivation.'' Valencia QB Zack Sapp's injured ankle is healing and he's the backup to Kyle Bauer against Chatsworth on Friday.
