HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: SAUGUS GIRLS RACE TOWARD DIVISION TITLE TODAY.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  cross country team alive in the postseason, the Saugus High girls will take aim today at a Southern Section Div.I team title at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

The Centurions, ranked No.2 in the state, are favorites to place first on the the three-mile hilly course after posting the fastest time among qualifiers last week.

Led by UCLA-bound Shannon Murakami, Saugus cruised in the Div.I prelims with a clocking of 92minutes, 45seconds to win its qualifying heat by more than three minutes. Murakami, the defending Div.I state champion, finished first in the heat with a clocking of 17:39, while Saugus' starting five all placed 18th or better.

The finals, which begin at 10:05a.m., have further implications for the Centurions, who can secure a spot in the state finals Nov.25 in Fresno by placing seventh or better.

 scheduled for Dec.2 in Portland, Ore.

The top five runners for the Centurions are Murakami, Katie Dunn, Amber Murakami, Brianna Jauregui and Keri Molt. Amber Murakami, a freshman, is Shannon's younger sister. Shannon Murakami is the only senior on the team.

Saugus' top two challengers are Fountain Valley, ranked No.4 in Div.I, and No.5 Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta.
