``We've had some big name players in this tournament over the years and that really helped put the name out there,'' tournament executive director and Sylmar coach Bort Escoto said. ``This thing originally started as a fundraising event. We had no idea it would blow up the way it has.''

Arenas, who graduated from Grant of Van Nuys, played with Sylmar in 1996 and was named the MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. ``We've had some phenomenal individuals play in the War on the Floor over the years,'' tournament director Jack Pollon said. ``The thing that really keeps this tournament alive and well is the teams ... We've always got commitments from the top programs in Southern California.''

There's no shortage of talent this year, either, and Taft appears to be the odds on favorite to win with perennial City Section playoff contenders Dorsey, Sylmar and Birmingham of Lake Balboa, the defending tournament champion, posing threats.

The Southern Section is well represented, too. Montclair Prep of Van Nuys, which won the Div. IV-A title last season, Thousand Oaks, a Div. I-A finalist, and Inglewood, a Div. II-A qualifier, figure to make noise at some point during the tournament.

On the move: Taft will unveil one of its two transfers in this weekend's tournament. Richard Sims, a 6-foot-5 junior forward from Serra, will make his debut in a Toreadors uniform Saturday.

Marcus Addey, however, is recovering from a broken nose and the 6-4 senior guard from Inglewood is expected back in six weeks.
