There were plenty of questions surrounding the Canyon High boys' basketball team entering the season, perhaps the most important of which was: How were the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Eugene Mewborn is providing some answers. Mewborn, a transfer from Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , has emerged a legitimate scorer for Canyon, and the Cowboys are off to a fast start as a result.

``We didn't know too much about him when he came here but we're happy to have him,'' Canyon coach Chad Phillips said. ``We didn't think he'd make as big of an impact as he has. He's blossoming.''

Phillips spent the summer trying to find players to replace the departed Kris Rincon, Chase Wilmore, Lucas Guidroz, Casey Floyd and Bryan Lewis Bryan Lewis (b. His first NHL experience was in the 1966-67 NHL season. , all of whom graduated in June. In fact, Ryan Kuhn entered the season as the lone returner with extensive varsity experience.

``We've had some chemistry issues in the past, but we those are working themselves out now,'' Phillips said.

Mewborn is averaging 18 points and just less than 10 rebounds per game. His play was instrumental this past week as the Cowboys (5-2) advanced to the Canyon Tournament semifinals.

``He's our big scoring threat inside right now,'' Phillips said. ``He's fit in great with the team. With Mewborn and Kuhn, it appears as if Canyon has a chance at making a run towards another league title. However, the two must have some help from role players such as Jerrid McKenna and Cody Anderson.

``I think we have the makings of something special here, especially after we get everyone on the same page,'' Phillips said. ``We're going to keep moving forward. These guys are going to be just fine.''
