HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: SCHAEFFING IS ON A TEAR FOR QUARTZ HILL.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Brett Schaeffing is not one of the four players on Quartz Hill High's baseball team who have committed to Division I colleges. Schaeffing is just the team's - and one of the area's - hottest hitters.

The senior catcher is batting .545 and leads the Golden League with five home runs and 17 RBIs through nine games.

``People are starting to talk about him,'' Quartz Hill coach Aaron Kavanagh said. ``He's a real quiet guy, so he's not out there trying to get attention, but someone's going to find him and get a real gem gem, ornamental mineral or organic substance

Schaeffing went 2 for 2 with four RBIs in Wednesday's league opener, a 12-0 victory over Littlerock. He led the Rebels to the championship of the Golden League Preseason Tournament when he hit a grand slam grand slam

and two-run home run in Saturday's final against Palmdale.

``He hit well last year,'' Kavanagh said. ``The big difference is the power. It was just a lot of work on his part during the offseason. ... We didn't change his swing. It's just added strength and a lot of repetition.''

Schaeffing is far from the only big hitter on a team that is ranked No. 3 in Southern Section Div. III. The Rebels (7-2) have a .438 team batting average batting average

Stock homered Wednesday against Moorpark, giving him five home runs for the season, one behind Lambo, who has six in seven games.

The Marmonte's next-highest home run total is held by Agoura's Nick Farinacci and Simi Valley's Nick Giarraputo, who each have three.

Stock led the league with eight home runs last season.

Stock and Lambo are competing for more than just a home run title; their teams are tied for first place in league. Agoura (8-0, 3-0), which moved up to No. 1 in this week's Baseball America This article or section is written like an .
