 has 9,432 officers -- more than two dozen of whom have come through Monroe's program. And with a goal of having 10,000 cops by 2010, the LAPD hopes training programs like Monroe's will keep turning out potential recruits.

"This program has challenged us academically -- and motivated and encouraged us," Skibicki said. "I think we all feel some obligation and desire to work in the law enforcement or community-service field."

There are 1,200 students enrolled in police magnet programs in five high schools and two middle schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. . They take a broad approach to the study of law, with community service as an integral part of the curriculum.

But Bratton said he wasn't at the North Hills campus on a recruiting trip Monday. The chief was there to say thanks to the kids and their instructors for being positive forces in their community.

"With gangs and so many other diversions, it's not easy being a young person in Los Angeles today," he said. "You have daily challenges, stresses and strains I never had as a student.

"You should be proud of yourselves. You are special. Take advantage of this opportunity and go on to be whatever you want to be in life.

"On a more selfish note, I sure would like to see some of you in the uniform of an LAPD officer someday. That would make me so proud."
