HIGH HOPES FOR N.D. FAVORITES TO WIN 4TH TITLE IN 5 YEARS.Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks has made a habit of winning the Southern Section Div. III boys' team track and field title, taking home the prize three of the past four years. This season, Notre Dame might have its best track team ever. Usually, Notre Dame does it with depth. This year, the Knights have multiple state-caliber athletes. Scott Tsuda had the top qualifying mark Saturday in the triple jump at 48 feet, 3 3/4 inches. Rodney Glass posted personal records in the 100 meters (10.53) and 200 meters (21.29), placing second overall in both events. Garrett Green took fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.44) and third in the 300 hurdles (38.25). Tsuda, Glass and Green, as well as both sprint relay teams, are on pace to advance past today's Masters meet. The top five finishers in each event today go on to next weekend's state meet in Sacramento. Last year, only Glass and the 400 relay advanced to state. ``I think this is the best track team in school history,'' Notre Dame coach Joe McNab said. ``We'll score a lot of points at state if we run well at Masters.'' The improvement of Tsuda and Green to join the elite level has been key for Notre Dame. ``I didn't really sit down and make goals at the beginning of the season,'' said Green, the starting quarterback on the football team. ``I'm out for track to stay in shape for football. I didn't know I was going to be running these kind of times.'' --Giuffre out: Margaret Giuffre from Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Expectations were high but the Crespi of Encino runner had trouble meeting them. For most of the season, he wasn't even breaking 11 seconds. But in the past few weeks, Harris has turned it around. He put himself back in contention to make the state meet Saturday with a 10.75 in the 100 meters. ``I had a case of senioritis earlier in the year,'' Harris said. ``The rain came and made us unable to run on our dirt track, then I got a little lazy.''
